Ive came across a 044 that wasnt running. Had a look over it and i noticed when i had the carb off and looked inside the jug that whenever i pulled it over i could only see the side of the piston and not the head/rings. Is this normal?

the fuel mix enters the combustion chamber via transfer ports in the cylinder wall from the crankcase. The crown of the piston doesnt travel below the inlet.

The best way to inspect the condition of the piston and rings is to remove the cylinder, the second best way is to look through the exhaust port.

It sucks the fuel mix into the crankcase on the up stroke and it enters the cylinder through the transfer ports. If you want to see into the cylinder you need to take the exhaust off.

Does anyone know what size and thread the bolts are that hold the two halves of an 070 crank case are and where to get them?

Sorry flattyre I can't help you with that question. But why don't you start a thread documenting rebuilding your 070. I did this with two saws that I rebuilt and got loads of help from members along the way.
