It does not matter what way it goes as some will be happy some will not, i was VAT registered once, never again as i hated collecting money for the government, yes i could claim some back when purchasing kit and fuel but the trade off did not seem worth it to me, i stay under the limit.

The system needs a revamp.

Lower the reg limit (£30k sounds good so one man bands can still earn a good "wage") or make everyone do it

The vat should only be paid by the end user not paid & reclaimed as it passes through each company / trader.

i'm a one man band ( well, till next week when i join the ranks of employERS. :blushing:)

if i only took 30k in a year i'd pack up.

what with over 2k a year insurances ( van, PL, EL)

over £500 a month fuel,

never mind training, ppe, renewing kit etc

it'd leave me with about 10k a year in wages :thumbdown:

we're getting to the threshold now, so in a month or so i'll be splitting the business. gardening / landscaping on one side, and tree work on the other..simple

:001_tt2: to the vat man

tom,, do you honestly charge VAT on EVERY job you do?? you NEVER do "cash" jobs at all.....??

just a quick note to say, 'cash' shouldnt be discussed, i know of people in differant trades that have had 'web' discussions used against them in court, be careful out there, big brother is bigger than ever......

Don't register, but tell people you are (you can make up a number easily enough using the last 9 digits of your mobile no., for example).

Hey presto!

20% more cash to spend on drink, drugs, ladies and porn every time you do a job.

BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!

Be very careful, make sure you have separate equipment (including vehicle) for each business. If you don't the vat man may just say "no they are not separate businesses, so you owe us vat on all your turn over since your

reached the threshold".

I used to run two businesses, one commercial (vat registered) ,one domestic (none vat) I has separate kit for each one. In the end it was costing so much to have them separate I just combined them.

Why do you need EL if you are a one man band?

You don't, if you only work on your own all the time.

If its your job, and someone is assisting you, then they are your employee for that time period.

Therefore you are required by law to have Employers Liability insurance.

If you are a one man band, and are assisting someone else on their job, they are required by law to have Employers Liability insurance.

Its very simple and very clear. :001_smile:
