i know plumbers and joiners and other people in silly (non-dangerous) trades who earn plenty of cash.. £150 per day on the books is an easy achievement... why is our trade paid the way it is... Obviously there are too many people learning the trade and are willing to work for peanuts... Tesco's workers earn as much as most climbers...

 

You've hit the nail on the head there, supply and demand. This is a great job, so lots of people want to do it, therefore wages are low.

Brodie ,you are very correct in what you say re plumbers & electricians

 

The problem in being able to sustain the wages you talk about need a constant flow of good revenue & as you mention there are many other reasons

some of which depend on which side you sit , newbies well we all were there once , though there certainly seems to be a glut of staff wishing to get into this kind of work

kudos or coolness & discovery channel programs

To draw comparisons to other trades our industry has a large amount of competition from a wide spectrum of have a go's

so it can be extremely hit & mis dependant on the client sector ,most prominant in the private domestic market

 

greedy employers , well maybe but lets face it they are theones paying the wages & risking the overheads , so WHY not I agree some could or maybe even should pay more ,however given the factors above they may not

then look at the impact of transiant staff levels an employer may also face , if they invest in a staff member give them the skills & training they are then somewhat behind as those things cost money so they need to recoup them

THe money that you see being charged IS far from the profit made.

 

You may find what you are looking for in taking the risk for yourself & goin on your own

this is not an answer but I do feel you will struggle to attain the wages you seek , they are out there but It maybe in your interest to take a lower starting wage & prove your loyalty & Ability , in that way your foot is in the door & the employer is more likely to want to retain you as see you go to a competitor.

 

If you can add value to their business they'll know it so long as you disguss your goals at interview , then you all know what to expect

I'd rather work 5 days a week for £50 a day doing a job I loved and go home happy to my family every day than work for £100 a day and spend all my time moaning about how crap my job is.

Yeah well done. This has however been discussed before and you can attain the correct tickets to be a badass risk taking climber in about 3 weeks, which makes our job technically classed as unskilled.

it took you 3 weeks haha, i got mine in about a day and huck took 10 minutes, saying that i had been doing this very very dangerous extremely skilled job for 10 years with no training or help and never had a claim or cut off any of my many many limbs:biggrin:
