 What is it called?

Anyone know the technique to use one?

I still have one and the tapered auger that matches it. When I was apprenticed as a carpenter I used them to make a pole ladder, that also required me to rip down a timber scaffold pole. I still possess the ladder.

Got a handle in it, not quite to plan, lots of draw knife work20250706_191304.thumb.jpg.edfa9775e5697e01223e44c9528ee90d.jpg

I have a modern example of that, very useful, and less effort for me in my old age  to use than the usual type.

Some people at work used to cosplay at being shovels and other items of garden equipment.  Honestly, what a bunch of tools.

Walked on Dartmoor today and found a tin mining museum.  This was a miners shovel.20250707_145045.thumb.jpg.811b9e2b221fba9529201c2bb949faca.jpg20250707_145031.thumb.jpg.abab2dd23024705e352d9bed6ce1c6f8.jpg

Where on Dartmoor is that tin mining museum? I've not heard of it, I'd be interested to visit one day. Been to a couple in Cornwall, I didn't know there were any in Devon.
