These dudes?

 

Wood wasp larvae in the photo below. Whether it is safe to add tot he wood pile depends what you are planning to do with the wood. Like all firewood it is best to bring it into the house as and when you need it, not days in advance and this reduces any infestations. Keep the wood in the wood pile, they'll be happy there.

 

If they are wood wasps you'll notice the adults pretty quick - they are huge

I sometimes get the wasps in the front room when it warms up a bit and they come out of the wood. I open the door and try to direct them out. They fly round like the coastguard helicopter once they get going.

We get hornets in in logs occasionally. They sound like a chinook!
