New spikes time soon .... bashlin twisted?

Evening all, it may well be new spikes time soon.

I've used bashlin steel spikes for years,  velcro upper and leather lower. Anyhow the pads are splitting etc. Had a look online and looking near enough 200 quid for new pads :0

I do like these bashlins the main point being, I use short gaffs and on these the bottom of the gaff is near enough level with the base of your foot.

A couple of years back I treat myself to new diesel geko alloy...... problem being that short gaffs were like 1 1/2-2" up from your bloody base of your foot.... felt really weird and not for me.

I was wondering if the twisted bashlins are an improvement on the straights? And what do they actually do? Twist to your knee or what?

And before I dive in, is there any other spikes to look at consideringni want the short gaff near enough level with base of my foot!

Cheers

Look at how much new spikes are too, I've been surprised how much they shot up. £200 on pads might be good value if they're comfortable.

Ohh I have 😂  horrendous they are. Think these spikes were 200 quid ish new 😂

Now they are 4-600 quid.

I'd only change mine due to being non replaceable gaff I think they are.  Just wondered if twisted are more comfortable

I have used the Bashlin steel twisted shank spikes for a few years now with velcro padded plus standard 41mm gaffs and find them comfortable, previously had straight shank spikes which I didn't find comfortable. The Bashlin twisted shank spikes I find are a good fit and don't rub my ankle and very secure with velcro pad. However, like most things it will be down to personal preference but I do prefer them myself. Price when I last looked £450 plus vat. They came with a spare set of bottom straps which I have not yet needed. The gaffs screw in so can be replaced if need be.

Anyone hate the Edelrid Talon? I guess Swinny would, as the spike looks pretty high...

I found I gaffed out alot with them. But I also do with geckos and x2s. Seem to be fairly stuck in my ways with rhenold kliens.

Tried so twisted shank bashlins recently. Didn't seem comfier. Will be for sale again soon

Well I didn't find owt nor did I look properly....

I changed the top velcro pads on the old bashlin spikes.... had a lad climb for me for a few days and he had some panther carbon fibre ones which looked good and weighed bugger all! Can't member the spike placement on them though.

Few month back bottom strap bust on my bashlins so replaced them and like new again now!

Note to anyone else.... bashlin bottom straps were 60 quid ish.... Buckingham ones 30 quid. Near same thing! Same length and a ring that just turns onto the little loop in the spike frame to attach easy.

My Bashlin Alloys must be knocking in 20years old now.

I have replaced the top Velcro pads and in my second set.  Could do with a new set tbh.  Bottom strap tore last year so I stuck some others I found.  A friend had some ones h used for his Buckingham spikes.  Worked a treat and good as new.

Or at least they will be once I buy another set of top Velcro pads.

I have toyed with the idea of getting some newer ones.  I’ve tried a few other brands but none feel as comfy as the Bash Alloys.

Plus the cost of them.

“Holy empty wallet Batman”.

I think I paid about 280 quid for my Bashlins.  Now they are mega moolah!

I had a set for a short time, absolutely hated them. The gaff angle was so steep you had to be very far away from the stem for them to actually grip, and the length of the gaffs were either too long or short. Horses for courses but they aren’t my cup of tea

I think with spikes the best thing to do is stick to what you know… I could change brands frequently when younger , I’ve had kliens , bashlins in the past and much easier to adapt to change but having been on distils for about 20 years now  i tried some the other day it was like watching a new born deer trying to walk for the first time.
