Why are Horticultural professionals SO devalued?

A lot of people confusing horticulture and grounds maintenance here.

Pay is shite for both to be fair, but whilst you could easily train a monkey in a nappy to do basic grounds maintenance, I disagree that nearly everyone could turn their hand to horticulture.

Most people would have the sense to not bother.

I remain, potting on thousands of griselinia,

A penniless horticulturist.

I started my Forestry/Arb career after working in the landscaping side, design and build, for a number of years, largely due to a lifelong  interest in plants, trees, nature and biology.

I never once made any career decisions based on financial reward, if I was money orientated I would have gone into advertising, media, IT or Politics.

If you want to make money from horticulture, hire a lockup and fill it full of skunk.

All in good fun. My wife studied horticulture. Big money possible in the field, as with everything, if you can go far enough and make a name for yourself, like garden design and stuff.

Grounds maintenance, yeah, big money there too if you can build a team of guys with a fleet of mowers and land the contracts to keep them busy. Some are making big money at everything, and some are making a crust at the same thing, it's about the individual drive, savvy, and luck.

Can anyone remember the tree officer for Bromley in London who honestly looked like Swiss Toni? Hair all done up,shiney suit and leather soled shoes.

I remember him dashing into a Garden where we about to fell a tree screaming  "if you fell that I'll fine you". One of my groundies said  "Felling Trees is much like making love to a beautiful woman" the home owner just creased up.
