Not sure if you can close off a road fotally for ten minutes at a time.. basically, as you are moving from one light to another, the road would effectively be closed all day..

 

You need to talk to the highways authority

Agreed. People on boards can make decisions in the moment about releasing traffic which makes for a far smoother operation from a traffic point of view. Especially if close to fixed traffic lights at one end of your work lane because you can't afford to have traffic stacking up close to them.

 

In my experience the abuse is far less when using boards than if you operate the same system with lights as you're able to let things flow better.

If it’s 30mph or below, cones and signs should be sufficient.  Usual caveats apply, ie, all operatives should be trained and competent for the task in hand, so holding a current street works qualification. 
If it’s above 30, you could ask to have the whole lane off under lights and just pull one head in, reducing the overall length, as you clear each street light.

Exactly, and as I said, a big difference between the two.

 

Road closing orders, diversions in place, notifications of the closure, etc, etc, full road closure is a big deal.

 

Whereas closing one lane and operating traffic control of whatever kind in much simpler.

Pretty simple, what authority do you have as a company/individual/sole trader and so on to cone off the road and start controlling the traffic flow? None I would suggest without the correct training, signage, traffic control equipment and council issued permits etc.

 

Perhaps if you presented a professional approach and detailed costings to the works within your tender this could stand you more chance of winning it? Its not always a race to the bottom. 

 

I work on around £1000 inclusive of permits and traffic control measures in the Hertfordshire area.

 

Ps don't pay for a visit any good company can do all required online.

Christ £1000. Did a job a couple of months ago with traffic management controlling traffic with 2 way lights on A120 in Essex so all had to go through Highways England, after hours so 20.00 to 5.00 all in £550.
