You work how many days a week??... 🤔🌳

I was doing 6 days commercial Forestry and Sunday sharpening up and planning for Monday, for the last 15 years in the UK.
Paid the mortgages off but did sod all else except work.

Moved to France before the Brexit cut off, I’ve done two 5 day weeks in the last 2 years, usually aim for 3 days and no more, I need a day a week to maintain the garden and plot.

Spent most of the Summer spending time with the kids on the River, my body is thanking me now.

I was like that. Sat down with a cup of tea at six in the evening to watch the news and was asleep within 5 mins . Its not good for you .

Yeah, I was shot Stubby, I edged my bets that I should make a change whilst not carrying any serious injuries, no regrets.

Usually 5 days, Saturday fixing farming pricing ,maybe moving equipment .

I try to avoid tree work on Sunday to clear head and separate one week from the next.

We used to work a lot of Saturdays but I now find staff are happier and daily output is higher when everyone gets two full days away from each other at the weekend.

In an ideal world I think a 4 day week would make for a better life balance and probably a longer career for a lot of tree workers.

I mostly work seven days, but to varying degrees.  Some days not much, maybe a bit of computer stuff or maintenance, other days a lot.  I too have very little work / life separation, been self-employed so long it's just pretty much who I am and what I do.  Sometimes it is a bit much, but generally I'm pretty happy with it, I generally enjoy what I do, so that helps.

 

Given the chance though, no I wouldn't work at all.  I'd have a nice big pot of money, enough to see out my days with whatever whim I choose and keep myself busy indulging said whims.  Unfortunately I'm constrained by the real world and so have to work, but ideally, no, I'd be a gentleman of leisure.

Three to four days/nights does me, that said, I’ve chosen not to buy a house, why would I commit to another 18 years of 5/6 days a week to pay a mortgage, I’d be more surprised than most if I last that long!

4 or 5 days on the tool. I do however work everyday, be it calls, viewing work, maintaining kit and sitting down to do some book work.

My aim is to be 5 days all in. Don’t mind long hours, but 2 days off a week is needed. Next step is getting a new mobile so I can switch the work one off on Friday evening.

At the moment I'm not really working. This is as a result of sorting out our new business, tax status and immigration status. That's all about done now, we've bought a machine and a lorry and we're going to be starting work in a couple of weeks.

 

I've gone into partnership with a machine operator friend here as we have a good mix of skills and it splits the base costs and risk.

 

We will be operating the machine for 60hrs a week between us. We'll each do two long days and one normal day a week, staying in the lorry overnight. The start of the week stint will be 07:00 Monday until 14:00 Wednesday. The back end of the week 12:00 Wednesday until 19:00 Friday.

 

That gives us 60 billable hours a week, with each of us working 34hrs a week including breaks. We each get 4 days a week off, and we plan to work 42 weeks a year. 

 

It should give us a good standard of living, leave time for family and other projects and be sustainable in the long term. 

 

I've got no interest in trying to make a lot of money, expand the business or anything like that. I want to live modestly, well within my means, enjoy life and stay healthy. 

 

On the question of whether I'd work if I won the lottery? Absolutely not. I enjoy forestry work, but I have a million other things I'd happily do if I wasn't working. I always think that people that say they couldn't envisage not working lack imagination!
