Killing some Conifer trees to let Ivy grow up them

Hi I have a small row of Conifer trees. I want to kill them and grow ivy up them. I cant afford to trim them regularly to preserve my view.

 

How would you recommend killing them?

Cut all the green off .

I would like to preserve the branches for extra privacy from the neighbors

If you leave any green on it may survive , if you cut back all the green but leave the branch that remains would that do ?  Failing that you could try " Eco plugs " . Or pull the lot out and put up 6 foot panel fencing .

Grow ivy up them.

 

On a more serious note, if the trees are dead and covered in ivy they will eventually fail/fall. Perhaps fairly quickly depending on tree and location.

Will eco plugs kill off living trees stubby never used them but have a couple i want to get rid of.

Pretty much anything oil based will do it. Not that I’d recommend pouring oil into the ground from an environmental perspective of course.

 

aside from that, what you’re hoping to achieve will look nothing short of horrendous and that’s best case scenario.

 

a pair of shears are cheap if you can’t afford to have a pro trim the hedges

A pair of shears to DIY would depend on whether it's a "row of small conifer trees", or a "small row of conifer trees".

 

Could the OP post a photo to give an idea of size.
