This is near my flat, they call it an apartment these days🤣

 

Many stories surround it, from a place that lead to a pub where crooks were taken via a tunnel to  a pub for their last drink before they were hung at the local church, to a priest hole. What you reckon? If it’s any help the road it is on is called Canal Street.

Couple of service valves there.. does the bricked up arch pre date the SVs? Could be an old pumping station or something. Looks industrial/municipal.

 

Or could be something like a tradesman's entrance for the attached dwelling/s, like a coal bunker.

From what I see the SV’s are a much later addition, the brickwork and down pipe are Victorian? There is a guided tour around the town that I may take a mooch along to soon. Having a read up the local historians can’t agree what it was.

Might have a look on Google maps? Google earth does an old map function (not the internet browser version) - my area has a couple of maps from 1930s, which might give a clue?

 

I wonder, the white house in the background - is that a similar age to the terrace? Where the car park has had some of the wall removed. I might guess a pedestrian gateway to a posh house in the street? Carriage gate was removed with more of the wall? Just a guess for now, but don't know if there is anything built behind that door

The four air bricks suggest the thing is sealed up, i.e. nothing happens behind the facade.  They could be later additions of course.

A watering hole, a trough for horses having been long since removed?
