NATO doesn't have Russia in a chokehold.  It's hardly a surrounded nation (or federation really if we're talking blocs).  It's ironic that Ukraine and Russia both joined the PfP with NATO; one has sought to embrace the spirit of cooperation and integration, the other hasn't.

 

Besides, this isn't really about Russia - it's about Putin and the people behind him and like him.

I guess you could say the same about any country. It’s not really about China, it’s about Xi Jinping. It’s not really about North Korea, it’s about Kim Jung-un, it’s not really about Iran, it’s about Ali Khamenei.

Fundamentally, it comes down to one thing. Naive, misinformed young Russian men are being sent to invade a country under false pretence and a great many of them are paying with their lives. But worse than that, millions of civilians in Ukraine are being subjected to terror, displacement, injury and death for nothing more than the war games of men more powerful than them.

 

This whole farce is so utterly without warrant, so totally pointless and such a stain on our civilisation that I struggle to see a way out. I cannot see Putin ever backing down, and given that Ukraine and Poland in 1939 seem to have many similarities, where next? 

 

With over 17 million square kilometres, you'd really think that Russia had enough bloody territory...

So, why does Putin want to "de-Nazify" Ukraine? He pointed said his problem is with the Nazis, not the regular Ukraine military and people.

 

What did these Nazis do, and to whom did they do it, to provoke Putin's ire?

There may well be a slack handful of repugnant nazi ideologies in Ukraine - maybe even more so than elsewhere, or at least they are less constrained in Ukraine. But certainly not enough to make a toss of difference to anything - and certainly not enough to warrant them being used as a primary justification for a neighbour invasion.
