Pricing is rarely so cut and dried.

Say I take an oak out for €750, I know that I can get it done by 1pm and so I’ll push the grinding which will be an easy hour and a half on a free afternoon, I am going there anyway so I’ll do it for €250, et voila a 4 figure day no sweat.

But if a random client phones up with a similar size stump in their garden it’ll be €490.

Sometimes it’s a discounted sweetener, sometimes it’s a straight out earner.

I don’t want a third party involved, and I don’t want to go back to the site on another date to clear up or generally keep an eye on things.

Sound advice.

I know from having employees that whenever unsupervised, shortcuts are often taken.

Regrinds are tedious and bad for the reputation.

It has been 5 years since I subbed stumps out and then I was on site to supervise, prep and clear up.

On domestics our small grinder gets thrown in the back of the transit whether there are chips/chogs in there or not, chipper is up the back of the transit and that's it. If our four wheeled rayco or a hired in tracked mid sized grinder are taken to a job its another truck/trailer involved, true costs of that grinder/grinding start to rack up.

The big rayco up the chuff of the mog eats nothing other than a bit of maintenance and that's still doing battle 30 years on.

I’m rolling with a predator 460, bought new 3 years ago, it’s as good as it gets for my kind of work, £131 pm finance, and covers that with first job of the month. Probably out twice a week, it’s very, very rare that I have to sub someone in with a larger machine.

Having owned Chinese 13hp grinder with almost a brake on one wheel up to 30hp tracked grinders the large pedestrian grinders like the predator 460 size is by far the best return on investment and also the best allrounder.

If I make the jump from a wee pedestrian to a man size machine, in the opinion of the members of this parish, which machine offers the most 'bang for the buck'?

Ah, that was taught at Merrist Wood on the early 10 week courses before the Irish troubles put a stop to it.

It was used on the farm I worked on in Westland N.Z.

The guys from the quarry would come and do it in exchange for meat around Christmas.
