It's what I do. I like the idea of the little clip though, and it's cheap

He point of the clip is it breaks if the saw get stuck In a step cut etc so you lose your saw but you stay in the tree. I can’t say I’ve had that happen but I guess it’s possible.

Isn’t that what proper saw strops do? Breakaway I mean.

I use old climbing rope but I thought that was the case with the pukka ones.

Not sure, think most are rated about the same as a karabiner. Cba to go and check the label to be honest, will look tomorrow if I remember.
