Hoping that Mods will allow this post here rather than the insurance forum as I imagine more people may see it and offer advice.

We had our vehicle broken into overnight while working away in Lincoln recently, (chainsaws, brush cutters, pole saws, helmets, climbing gear, basically everything.

We are insured with Aborisk and have been for over 12 years and have never had to make a claim.

We have just been informed by them that we are in breach of our policy because “vehicle was not kept in a locked building overnight”.

We literally work all over the country and just finding affordable/available accommodation is hard enough without stipulating the requirement for a locked garage.

Bearing in mind that this is a commercial policy and the nature of the work we do nationwide, this policy is clearly not fit for our purposes, we feel really let down by Arborisk, particularly when over the years we have tweaked/amended the policy with there advice, never once did they advise us that while working away our vehicle must be kept in a locked building overnight.

Yes, of course it’s our responsibility to read the policy wording (wonder how many actually do?).

Anyway, let this be a warning to you out there who work away from home and don’t keep there vehicle in a locked building overnight.

Having said that, anyone have a policy that covers there tools in a locked/alarmed vehicle overnight albeit parked on a gated private driveway?

I would be very interested to read your thoughts please as our policy is up for renewal next month (out of principal, we certainly WONT be using Aborisk again).

Thanks for reading.

Sorry to hear this, it stinks and there is all ways something in the small print that never makes sence until you have read it 20 times, When you dont pay on time they are on your back day in day out for payment, but look what happens when the situation is reversed, i know another lad who had there van and all contents nicked but van was found i think ? i will ask him how they have gone on,

Definitely ask your insurer to provide you with the ombudsman’s details - it can help to ‘lubricate the passage’. They really don’t like going down that road - do not be afraid of pressing the point.

Shitbags the lot of them.

Having to respond to complaints through either Court or Ombudsman means your insurer will need to use suitable legal expertise. That expertise will cost more than a few saws and sundry equipment. The threat of utilising either protection may we’ll make them reconsider. Go for it.

I'm one of the very rare people who does read their policy and it's frankly shocking that when I've queried details with my provider they don't know their policy wording means. I've currently got a complaint with the FOS and they seemed surprised I'd bothered reading the policy. So, you're not alone.

If you have the time and think it's worth it it might be worth making a formal complaint. If in your discusions with them you think you've mentioned your vehicles are not always locked away then they would have been aware of this and that may override the policy wording.

I certainly wouldn't say the obsundman is there to serve your needs, far from it, but they may decide in your favour or at least discuss the matter with you.

I read fine print too. Most of these sorts of financial products aren’t worth a wank and the people selling them are usually clueless spivs at best (and sharks at worst). Insurance is the main culprit, equipment warranties also very bad.

So going back to my original question in my post, does anyone on here have cover to protect the contents of there vehicle if a theft occurs overnight and the vehicle is not in a locked building?

If they do, I’d really like to know who the insurer are👍

I used to. With arborisk 🤔

Insurance companies are such bastards. I hope you manage to figure this out. I read the fine print and some of it is just illogical. My commercial vehicle policy with says I’m covered towing a trailer, but not a machine trailer. So a 750kg tow behind chipper is a no no, but a 3.5T trailer is fine 🤷🏻

Yes thanks Mr Squirrel, I’ve got some insurance consultant friends looking over the policy for me, to be quite Frank, I’m astonished with the way Arborisk are trying to play this, the people I’m speaking to at there office just make me cringe, just as well be talking Swahili to an automated machine.

Have you asked them to insure the chipper? They may cover it, even for little or no extra cost. When I've queried some details in a domestic car policy they have said they will cover some extras, just as long as I tell them.

Just ensure you have a record of what's agreed.
