Struggling to find labour? Time to buck up?

I don't quite understand the beef. I've had people ask me for days and then falter when I state my rate, but most just get me in and decide if I'm worth it. Some people don't want to pay what I ask and that's fine. The upside is I tend to work for the sharper folk who can price work well. Others are just desperate for competent guys. I did a 2 hour day last month for full day rate.

There's a lot of firms in the busier areas who work their arses off for a low rate all the time and I'm quite happy not to work with them.

The flip side is lads with 2 years experience thinking they can go out and charge what the competent guys are charging.

If you're willing to work for less than nobody will offer to pay you more.

Boss finds four employees, pays fair rate. One employee works hard, the others take the piss.

Boss kicks the three wasters out the door, keeps the hard worker, gives him a bit more money and finances six machines for far less per month than he was paying three wasters.

Only way I've been able to keep sane.

Very good point about freelance guys should be the ones to set the day rate.

Company owner should only ever set the rate when its paye.

The industry will not move forward until bosses ask what a subbies day rate is and then start pricing work accordingly.

Of course they (freelance guys) set the day rate, whether they get it or not is another issue.

It’s got nothing to do with moving the industry forward.
