They pull out " swamp logs " that have been buried in wet mud for years . They are well preserved and worth a lot of money usually . ( dependent on species ) .

Yes I get what you mean . I do remember there was film of the pictures above and commentary and the bloke said it was to preserve them .

It keeps out the stain fungus too and strangely makes the milling better.
