Fair enough; I hadn't seen those.  I don't think I'd be looking to deeply into the detail given the condition of that piece though!

 

I'm not adamant it's willow, it just seemed the obvious choice to me.

the stain in the cut end says willow, so does the bark, adn I'd guess from the general form of teh pieces tha they were all stems from a  typical multistemmed willow scenario. Willow is watery but it can be plenty heavy to start with.

Yeah looks like willow felled a load of multistemmed Salix caprea    ones that looked the same.

 

As so willow has a high moisture % so logs are heavy when green.

 

Whats is a quite sent woodland?
