It's not alway safe to think that putting more springs on the truck will make it safe as can the brakes deal with stopping at speed when you're a ton overweight. 

 

It's very easy to be over in a 3.5t truck everyday but it's also wise not to get greedy with how much you load on the truck and just price jobs so you can allow more tip runs during the day. 

 

If you have an accident when overloaded there is no answer you can come up with to get you out of it with the police, let alone your insurance company covering you.

In theory a stripped out car transporter style pickup with 7t gtw could carry a 6inch tracked chipper, and tow a 3,5t trailer with 2.3ish ton chip

Yeah bang on, i had the idea as i put my CS100 in the Hilux then tow a trailer for the chip as allows way more space.
Ideal would be a custom 3 wheeled 6-8” chipper at 750kg winched in and out to allow best position to drag to. stays sensible weight and then a 3.5t tipping trailer

I was following a transit this morning that had two pallets of turf on it, I would have thought about 2.5 tons on there minimum. All looked  about right because it obviously had HD springs but I noticed the bulges on the tires at road level were touching each other, that`s a blowout waiting to happen if it were on a motorway or dual carriageway for more that a few minutes.

Once upon a time, I had a job at the far side of a town, and there was no way on God's Green Earth I could carry enough sand and paving slabs for the job in one trip with transit and trailer. I loaded up what I thought was reasonable, and to the casual observer, it looked well within limits. ( It wouldn't have been, had I gone on a weighbridge). Having arrived at the job, we unhitched the trailer, unloaded slabs from the van, and my co-worker stayed on site while I went to fetch the rest of the slabs from the relatively nearby merchant. While sitting at the lights, waiting to get across to the merchant's, I burst out laughing. Crossing in front of me, was a Transit pickup. Loaded with soil. And then loaded with a bit more. And then a full load put on for luck. I kid you not, it was level with the top of the cab! I mentally thanked him for " running interference" as the Americans have it, and went on my way with my remaining slabs.
