You extrapolated "google not working?"
Into "are you suggesting eugenics?"

So status, rights and opportunities is the issue is it?

Millionaires are generally referred to as Mr or Mrs. So is someone on a sink Estate. So that Status covered.

We have the same rights as a Millionaire and we even get free legal cover should we be so poor as to not afford our own. Thats two covered!

I guess that leaves opportunities? We'll you got me there! No one will ever have the exact same opportunities, ever. There simply is not the mechanism that exists to make that happen. Thankfully there is plenty of rags to riches Millionaires out there to prove you dont need to have the same opportunity's as everyone else to make it in this world.

I have to say I’m confused.

You got a loan (cheap or otherwise) gave the money to your brother.

Now you’re complaining you’ll have to pay the loan back.

What am I missing?

Do you ever get the feeling you're not getting the point Andy?
It's so much more mate.
And you know exactly what I mean.
You're a bright bloke Andy,
I'd really like to sit down with you and a few others off here and have a face to face, preferably in a pub.
I'm not very well educated as you may have guessed,
But I read a lot of history.
It teaches me that if you really want to make a change in the world you can.
But there are many vested interests who oppose equality.
Look at slavery as someone mentioned earlier.

I know Im being somewhat factious but Im genuinely asking you what your beef is with inequality and you're telling to google the dictionary definition. So thats all I can reply on if you refuse to enlighten me further.

Id really like a night in the pub with you and a few other like minded guys from here. @Big J for one, @eggsarascal @topchippylesis another few off the top of my head. Im sure we'd avouid punching ach other for a few hours. :D

Im not very well educated either, Im not sure you had to guess that though. :D I stopped going to School at 14 and my poor mum had to go to a Childs Court because of that. I left completely at 15 and had to go back for my exams when I was 16. But like you I like to read and I have a passing interest in History as well, and like you I like to think Im a grafter. So we make the best of the opportunities that present themselves to us. You may have had better opportunities offered to you and vice versa I dont believe its possible to put laws in place to ensure we both had the same opportunities. And as mentioned before there is countless examples of rags to riches millionaires in the UK. Disproportionately amongst immigrants who seem to laugh at us Brits who whine and complain about the opportunities we feel we have and they just swoop in and take full advantage of that. As an empirical anecdote my Brother in London works for a Polish Lad who came over to the UK with the clothes on his back and as a Labourer on building sites and now runs a multi-million pound Construction Firm. My Brother manages the Public Sector side of the Business and I repeatedly tell him he is selling himself short for working for £50k in London, but his boss keeps him sweet with bottles of £100+ whiskys and other gadgets. I have to tell him why do you think he'd bribing you with these gifts. :D

If you truly believe you can change the world then be the change you think you can make. I think its a crock of sheet myself, much like Karma is a concept the weak use to justify doing nothing in retaliation, they'll just repeat to themselves Karma will catch up with the offender.

I belive we can all make small differences if we really wanted to, collectively we could make a difference but we're all to lazy and greedy for that.

Where was the device you connect to here made?

Where was the clothes on your families backs made?

Who harvested your fresh produce?

How ethical is the meat and eggs you eat?

You talk of making a change but if we're honest with ourselves we dont truly and deeply care enough to stop using these consumer goods. We'll fine one reason or another to justify it and invariably that will come down to blaming others. The rich no doubt? Its far easier to lay the blame and guilt at their door than our own.

Interesting thread, and one I'm surprised I missed.

Firstly, the furlough payments are going to be very tough to wean a chunk of the population off of. There is endemic fear of covid-19 in the population and I understand that. I think it's overblown, principally by a somewhat hysterical media, but is does remain a deadly virus for some.

That being said, personally, I must admit that I've become a total nihilist with regards to the whole situation. Life isn't really worth living in the long term if it's going to continue like this (huge restrictions on personal liberty and businesses collapsing left right and centre), because the economic effects with far outweigh any struggles we'd have with the virus. I'm young, I'm fit, I don't have any preexisting health conditions, I don't socialise at all at the moment with anyone in high risk groups, and if it does get me, I'm life insured to the hilt, so my family will be covered. There is no guarantee of a cure, no timescale for a cure if one is found and no assurances about it's effectiveness.

The general public not in high risk groups need to get back to normal. The vulnerable need to be shielded, and those that care for them protected, but everyone else needs to work to pay for that continued effort.

On the topic of wealth inequality, it's something I do feel quite strongly about. The disparity between rich and poor is astronomical, and has only been increasing over the past 100 years. There is no justifiable reason that anyone needs hundreds of millions of pounds, and it's worth remembering that for many of them, it's inherited wealth. It's really easy to completely avoid inheritance tax, and wealth passes through generations without any challenge from tax authorities.

The poor do need to be paid a bit more, and the rich a bit less. With egalitarianism comes increased overall happiness, which is surely the goal of life? Money to a point helps attain that, but it's surprising how low that point is, after which additional money makes no difference to life satisfaction.
