Chain Grinder Advice

Hello everyone, I hope this is the correct sub-forum for this topic. I am not a professional but have to do quite a bit of tree and chainsaw work throughout the year at our property. I own a Stihl HT101 pole saw, Stihl MS200T climbing saw, Stihl 024 ground saw. I currently have to take my chains to a local sharpening business, but the cost is starting to add up, especially this time of year with more use.

 

I would like to buy a sharpening grinder for the chains that can do all three saw chains. Can someone advise me on a grinder that can do all three. I am not looking at the cheapest but i can’t justify the real top end grinders. I have looked online for grinders but I’m not sure if most will do the micro pole saw chain i have.

 

I have seen an Oregon mini grinder on screwfix website for £60 with two different discs. There are also others around that price like Sealey etc. I am looking to spend up to about £150 I guess but would rather not spend much as it will not be in constant use.

Best option is to buy the appropriate sized files and guides, polesaw and 200T will be the same, and learn to file sharpen. Sharpening them regularly, little and often will make life easier for the saws as well. You could buy the roller guides they would help you learn the angles and depth to file to.

If you bought a grinder you would need to reset between your different chain types.

Get a saw chain vice to hold the chain easier than trying to sharpen on the bar

Whilst I enjoy sharpening by hand, sometimes it’s just easier to stick the chain under the electric sharpener. I bought a Clarke ECSS2 machine a couple of years ago and it’s been great. Around £40 or so and a spare disc is less that a fiver. Does all of the chains I run - 3/8 micro, .325 and 3/8 with no problems. Yes, you have to adjust between different chains, but adjustment and setting up is easy. I couldn’t justify spending a couple of hundred pounds on a posh one, but this is absolutely fine.

Thanks for the replies. I have tried manually using a Stihl file in the past and i just couldn’t get it right so i would rather get an electric grinder for consistency on each tooth etc.

 

The Oregon one at Screwfix looks identical to the Clarke one, but the Clarke one only comes with one disc and doesn’t state exactly what chains it sharpens. Is the pole saw micro chain a problem, i would imagine a disc for the other chains would be too big for a micro chain?

I use the Clarke machine to sharpen all manner of chain sizes with just the one size of disc. The description of the machine states it will do this, and I have had no issues with it.

Get a couple of the Lidl ones and at their price leave each set with whatever disk you require, last disk I purchased was about £4.50 off Flebay, mine is three years old and stihl (lol) going strong!!

I also have the Clarke one from machine mart, paid about £50 for mine a couple of years ago. Cant fault it, it sharpens all my chains of different sizes. Yes you have to set it up for each one, but it only takes a minute or so. I highly recommend them.

What age is the ht101 as there will be a difference in file size depending on the year
