The commercials are good value and pretty easy to put seats in the back. Last one I sold at 140k to move back into a defender before they stopped making them.

I’m afraid it’s far from nonsense. I can assure you I can afford one if I wanted one but after spending plenty of time behind the wheel of Land Rovers whilst in the forces and owning an ex welsh water 110 plus most recently seeing first hand the experiences of friends/workmates with Range Rovers and Discoveries you could not pay me to own one. Mind you I’m 6ft 5”so not really much room in defenders for me. Can’t deny that the RR/Disco are not amazing motors when running but the bills that can come with them are crazy. I’ve just asked one of the guys for evidence of what’s been done to his Disco 4 after 10 weeks in the main dealer. On the other end of the scale I ran a 2003 patrol from 13000 miles up to 157000 without a single glitch and it was still on original clutch when sold. 
just added part of the bill off the Disco 4 I mentioned, 17 plate with 45k on the clock, total amount was not far shy of 20 grand. And that’s not jackanory type stuff. I’ve left off the owners address and vehicle details out of curtesy.

I did a job for a former JLR development engineer. He still has his Disco 3 as a general hack. He said it was both the best towing vehicle he had ever had, and also the single must unreliable vehicle he had owned.

Bloody Hell, those horror stories and repair costs make my G Wagen's very very very  cheap to own,

I could even get one re-engined with a late 1990's zero-electronics/dead-reliable OM606, for less than some of those bills.

My puma 110 has been very good, just had egr valve, cooler and clutch etc after 125k miles plus routine maintenance but it will be the last LR I own, I can’t bring myself to pay a staring price of 40k with vehicles that have so many issues and they all look pretty much the same now and to me have a greater “chav” look than ever before!

worked at a land rover specialist for several years when i was a mechanic and i would steer clear of the disco 3 and early disco 4's with the 2.7 engine. i think they rectified issues on the 3.0.

 

i done countless snapped cranks, timing belt tensioners splitting from the block, egr's, turbos, air compressors, suspension bushes etc etc etc 

 

id personally look at a d2, could pick up a decent one for 4k. land cruisers probably a fair bit more than that but they're 3.0l straight six engines are bulletproof.
