Hello guys

Could anyone recommend a decent tap and die set please? I know cheap sets should be well avoided but I’m not sure at what cost they become good? Any help would be great - I could have done with a set yesterday!!

Thank you.

Any taps and dies made by Dormer  will serve you well .  Most tool rooms use Dormer .

Thanks chaps! Does the kaliber set go big enough to sort out a bolt with an 18mm head that’s stripped the thread it goes through?

I’ll have a google of the dormer thanks.

Wowzers they are expensive!! I think they might be a tad overkill for me, mine would be for now and then - but still want to be respectable [emoji106]

You may be able to buy a single size tap from eBay for a few quid.  You can even make one from a high tensile bolt if you are stuck - it just takes a couple of minutes.

18mm is not a common size head- could be anything. You will need to corectly identify thread, both size and pitch. Furthermore, you can't just run a die through and expect all to be well with the situation above. You need to either drill out and retap to a larger bolt, or drill out and tap to fit a helicoil.

I've never spent Dormer money on taps and dies.

If you ever worked in a " trade shop " tool makers that would be all you ever used .
