:confused1:Which do you give??? BIG difference!!! :001_smile:

Well yes there probably is in the letter of the law. But that aside for a minute - whether you give a quote or an estimate people will see that as your price.

People see it as one and the same.

Most adverts I see (as well as mine) ...... free estimates.....

I really do disagree, IMO there is a VERY REAL difference.

I ALWAYS give quotes

All my advertising says free quotes.

If you give an estimate, that fine you can charge more, as you have not committed to a specific price.

With our work you can see exactly what is involved in the job, so as "professionals" we should be able to give a price and stick to it.

Mechanics and the like can't always be sure of whats they are going to find once they begin.

Got to disagree there :001_tongue:

Even professionals make mistakes.

And if we took for example a thick conifer hedge then like mechanics you can't always be sure of what you find until you begin.

And yes there may be a very real difference between a quote and a price - but joe public don't see it like that IMO - they see an 'estimate' or a 'quote' as one and the same.

Come on!! its a lot easier to have a look inside a hedge when quoting, than it is to look inside a gearbox :001_tt2:

You have are saying there is a "difference" between quote and a price??:confused1:IMO they ARE the same, an "estimate" on the other hand is IMO a guild price that can go up or down.

They must thinner hedges where you are!:laugh1:

And fair dos doing a gearbox is an extreme example - what about plumbers charging by the hour? Why can't they give a quote on the job when they get there? A lot of their work is pretty much standard stuff.....

What I am saying is that whether you give the public a quote, a price or an estimate - they see them all as one and the same IMO. They see this as what you will charge for the job.

Bear in mind this is something I have done only 3 times in 8 years - just genuine mistakes where I heavily underquoted. In each case I discussed with customer and they agreed I could increase the price so that at least the job was worth something to me.
