Can you safely rig trees with kretz?

All this is tainted somewhat by a walk in the woods at xmas where I came across a just fallen big beech snapped at the base with Kretz obvious. Made me think, too much possibly!

I have thought about getting in another climber and me running ropes, but I am not sure I want to send someone else up a tree I have reservations about. I tend to lead from the front with anything dodgy.

Rigged hundreds of dead trees, it’s all about being gentle!
As far as no room to free fall! I’d rather climb slowly, get as much height as I can, use a 46 and light sabre the limbs and chunks off it. Get the saw through before the limb even moves. It’s all about the feel and your bottle on the day.
If you are in experienced then avoid a crane.

Yup - get the drill out ! Definately helps to define the decay . Leggy crown on it ? Piece it down on yr rigging kit n take yr time. K ( an double yr price ! )

The crane would be the quickest way of getting it and yourself down, prob' require an extra body on the ground to process.

 

MEWP cheaper, you can rig or cut and chuck.

 

If you rig look at ways of diverting loading through the crown and use friction at the top with rings etc, you can easily terminate the rope to use as speed line when required. Look at the rope and pinto set up. Your grounds man will soon find his feet letting pieces run.

 

Try and build a rapor with a larger company for jobs like this if you are a small firm?

 

Do what suits you and explain the process to the client. Remember no one is holding a gun to your head.

just for my own education here, was is the main risk with krutz? Of the main stem failing if its shockloaded? Would using another rope as a backstay to counter the lateral pressure put on the rigging point be an option? This is all assuming your going to rig off the stem.

 

I guess another more complicated option would just use a ton of redirects/secondary rigging points to spread the load?

If I was guying the tree to reduce risk of failure I would be seriously considering another option.

As suggested previously use your drill and excavate a bit around the buttress roots to get an idea of extent of decay.

Simple answer here is mewp.

Clearly you have doubts climbing and rigging it down and imho its completely merrited,id be the same.

Take the safest option and use a mewp.
