Well Joe - if yr using cable-strop , it stops it dropping down to yr ankles as you shift abt , a good long slide down on the trunk aint funny if yr spikes come addrift . So a few pegs aint a bad thing , K

I know alot of folk just use a strop when on a pole with spikes but after 2 gaff outs and a couple of shit my pants moments i ALWAYS use a waist anchor.Adjustable ring to ring cambium saver is good or just choker your climbing system on.

 In my experience, people who rely on pegs for spiking never learn not to. Good technique and positioning is a far better tactic than leaving potentially dangerous pegs. They also foul rigging and climbing lines and make chogging down a pain.

 

If you're really concerned about gaffing out and sliding there are many better options than pegs, not that I've found the need personally.

 This mate, far better solution. I'm always really comfy on spikes so I dont usually bother, its rare that you'll gaff both spikes simultaneously but if you're concerned that's the way to go

The small stubs were previous deadwood cuts that didn't merit starting a saw for.

I obviously don't know the job, but ill wager a decent two man team would have made shorter work of it by climbing the tree properly and using a climbing saw to clear the branches and section down the stem. 

 

Regarding sap on kit, I find it comes off with the next climb or two. If its completely gunned up it goes in the washing machine when the mrs is out. 

Mr Haironyourchest, Those pictures make me cringe. I suggest you go and employ someone who knows how to climb and watch them for a bit. May be an eye opener, but could save you a lot of time and make you a lot safer from the start. Perhaps invite Joe for a holiday, soak up some of that incessant rain.

If you using your strop correctly there is zero chance of it ending up round your ankles. As for needing pegs to "catch" you if you slip, this IMO, is a bit of a myth. OK maybe on a smooth, wet Sycamore there is a possibility, but not on a conifer or any rough barked trees.

 

Pegs are a crutch, they are not needed and in my view are the sign of a poor or sloppy climber.

 

Ok so its only his 3 dismantle, but far better to start with good practice, IMO.

Well I think the guy has done well and as fr pegs, seems most reductions have more pegs left than my clothes line  but am not telling anyone what to do, he will develop his own technique to suit himself over time.
