Having a couple of pints last night and one of the local tree surgeons donated this 'Cos I know you like odd wood and it would be good to see something made out of it'. He reckoned it was Cherry but it doesn't look anything like it to me. It is fairly light weight and seems pretty open grained. I would have guessed at Yew from the bark and general shape but there's no hint of the usual pink colour. Any ideas?

Arbutus  ( strawberry tree)

Similar but this is more fluted . Also Arbtus is dense and heavy . looks like Yew to me as well .

Looks like yew from a distance, zoom in on the wood where its cut and it looks very much like hawthorn.

But then, hawthorn is very dense and heavy. (It sinks when green)
And the bark is too papery and flaky.
