Name that axe

I think it's for cutting something softer than wood. As others have said. Peat or turf or clay or something.
What's the story? Where did you find it?

My brother found it in a barn. Another mate suggested it's a throwing axe. Bleedin heavy though.

Been thinking about that axe, the handle don't look up to much, your a mad man if your swinging that thing over your head !

 

Its a one handed axe looking at handle , fire service would still have my bet for smashing windows of doors & then pulling the timder bars out of the way, may be early 1900's , this is not going to be standard issue in today's service , unless your station happens to be in a small old time  Welsh village,

My guess would be a form of Twybil for cutting out mortises in large timbers.
