First thing to do would be to tackle the open fires/non DEFRA stoves in 'clean air' areas and the folk who burn crappy old pallets and chipboard. Plenty for Sadiq Khan to have a go at without blanket bans.

Like the fella by me who seems to only burn old decking boards and kitchen cabinets.... stinks

Well , Norway are also facing a similar ban , as people now burn unseasoned wood or just rubbish- seriously affecting winter air quality , where as we here all know, burning properly seasoned hard wood has almost zero carbon input , Mayor Khan has late-life asthma ( No- do not ask how I know this ! ) and is hard line air quality campaigner..K

Been posting on FB re this issue.

As many of you know I sell stoves so am potentially in the firing line.

First up have a read here:  http://www.stoveindustryalliance.com/airquality/

Stoves within designated smoke control areas have to conform to certain emissions requirements if burning wood, they are known as Defra exempt stoves.

There are some PROPOSED EU regs scheduled to come forward in 2022 further tightening emissions and requiring an increase in minimum efficiencies from the current 65%.    Already some manufacturers have stoves that exceed the 2022 requirements all be it mainly in the mid market and upper end price wise.  These stoves are known as EcoDesign models are are pretty well all wood burners only.   You will have read in the link above that an EcoDesign stove has 90% less emissions than an open fire and 80% or more less emissions than a stove designed only 10 years ago.

However the Germans are all falling out with each other about this requirement as are other EU countries so its looking iffy over the other side of the water but here I feel it will come to be.

So banning open fires frankly would do us all a good turn,  they are a major cause of pollution even though you are not allowed to burn wood in one within a designated smoke control area.  Its ironic that within such an area a garden bonfire is perfectly legal.

But this is a guy flying a kite, no way will that go forward, the UK is in the forefront of stove design worldwide along with the Danes at Morso.

Would that be the “I think the population of London is SO stoopid as to not recognise a blatant political stunt” box Ti?

i get the point, maybe log burners aren’t the best idea in densely populated areas, but talk about starting at the insignificant bottom end of the scale.... [emoji33]

Pretty much I think, MrJ.

Talk about swallowing a camel and straining at a gnat...

Call me old fashioned but I think the world was a better place when you could burn "stuff".

well in an update I read, it said burning wood on fires and stoves would only come into effect on given days, when the air quality is likely to be bad..

I sense some walkback on this one...

I am sure Londoner are going to keep an eye on the special air quality alert system so they know the exact days when you can have your fire on. FFS, another daft thought up by a politician that will never translate to reality.
