Bunny ear or that what i call them

hey

 

was in a discussion with a colleague to day during felling and she never heard of this. now i call bunny ear but it could be wrong name for so what do you call the small cuts you put in below the hinge/ gob to stop the bark tearing down?

The 2 cuts i put at either side below hinge i thought were called sap wood cuts and i only usually put them in at spring time

Stops the butt wood splitting right up the stem

I've always heard them referred to as ears. Normally done on "snappy" species with a tendency to tear. Willow, popular etc. Good on small diameter cord wood or if felling a stand which is slightly too big for the bar.

I know what you mean but we just call em slash cuts..

I never used em on the deck when felling

Ears or wing cuts, they primarily used when topping something out that you are roped around i.e. The stem, to prevent it splitting and opening up thereby squashing you against the stem.

Always called them Sapwood cuts, Ears or Wing cuts as well

Sapwood cuts here.

Usually use them on the ground if the stump is staying, especially if it's being a left a little higher, especially on willow or connies if we're pulling them.

 

Nowt worse than unsightly bark tears on Mrs. Miggins new planter stand.
