Damn right! A MUST READ.

TCD: It's a good piece.

The effects are very clear to see. Not just in the ways that are detailed but also in the quality of outputs.

On many jobs that I see (hardwoods or o/m conifers/mixtures), the quality is fast approaching the bad old days of 'timber mining'. With prices either cut to the bone or payment on an uncertain basis it's no surprise that corners are cut or job sites looking 'underloved'.

I'd be happy to sign a petition on the basis of contractors being able to issue invoices 'off harvester/forwarder'. I think it would benefit the industry as a whole.

Regards

Gareth

I totally agree with the article, but fear that unfortunately you will never get solidarity within the industry, some will hold firm for a while maybe, others will simply accept the current terms and take more work.

There is a huge construction company near me who's payment term are 90days, I and others refuse to work them, but they don't struggle to get contractors.

Think the standard JCT contract is thirty days. We get huge contracts to read, sign and return - normally long after the works completed, but try getting some companies to adhere to the contract that they require you to!

Hoping you can zoom in and read the attached photograph. (or copy and paste, enlarge, rotate as neccessary etc)

I for one am happy to get "militant" about it.

Sums up my life perfectly.

So basically, you do the job, get paid 'if and when' the timber is collected but never know the weight for which you'll be able to invoice for - with any certainty.

Stacking shelves at Tesco's actually looks like a viable change of career!

Standard practice for construction/civil engineering sub-contract work and has been for many, many years. You still issue your own invoice at the end of the month, three months later you should be paid.

Absolutely nothing like the issues being raised in the original post.
