The one question on pay which comes around often is 'how old are you?'. I get it but don't at the same time. Someone is worth what they're worth and that's dependent on qualifications, ability, attitude and how they fit in with the team regardless of who or what they are.

 

I have a mate who is 20 and is the hardest working and most mature lad of that age I've ever met. Yet I get asked by thirty year old plus blokes if they can have some work and after a morning I'm cursing saying yes. Age for me on that basis is no measure of how much someone should be paid.

 

I shall await the lambasting patiently!

To justify your expenditure, extra stress and because it's your balls on the block.

 

Plus, and most importantly, because you can. (And money comes in handy)

I just explained my expenditure is covered, I don't stress about work too much (probs not more than said subby wondering about the next good earner).

Good planning and making sure I hire only the best means my balls are well cared for, though there's always a bit of contingency dosh added to the quote.

 

I could pay less, sure, but it would mean less quality workers, less productivity and thus no more money in my pocket per day worked?

 

I'm happy to make my subbies happy, it makes me feel good, them feel good, all of us earn good money and if a job needs to go on for a few more hours one day every so often both they and I are happy to slog on, never a grumble!

 

It suits my life and business model: I work as little as possible for as high a wage as possible, shared fairly.

Hi,

 

Why all the whining and groaning about wages? Bosses going skiing, fancy cars, houses etc etc etc ? Making a fortune of some inexperienced college knob with a CS 30-31, who cant even sharpen a saw, and naff all experience.

Supply your own vehicles, insurance all the kit, repairs to go with it and start up your own business, then you can have all the luxuries in life !!!! Cant actually understand why your looking for a job ???

But on a serious note, i'll pay you £30.00 a day, just to turn up for the entertainment factor.

Low wages are the reason this market is so saturated. Everyone wants to go on their own now chasing decent money, which then makes quoting more competitive and drives prices down, which in turn drives wages down; a downward spiral ensues.

People are working for very small companies, with no real job security and rubbish wages.

If ground staff and climbers alike, knew they could reach, say, £120 a day and £160 a day respectively, they'd be more inclined to work harder, stay loyal and not want to set up on there own, for example. If a groundsmans potential earnings are only £80 a day and some holiday days, well it's no wonder this is an over debated topic. People can earn that sort of money stacking shelves. This is a dangerous, skilled and hard industry and I for one think wages should reflect that. A brash dragger starts at £80 and a competent groundsman who can handle rigging, help the climber by pointing out pruning points on a large reduction etc etc should be able to command good money as they are a valuable resource/asset.

 

The thing is who want's to stack shelves?

 

While I see the point you are making, I think in reality if prices for jobs where higher, there would simply be more of an incentive for people to go on their own.

 

I totally agree that many charge far too little, but I don't know how this can be fixed?

It's a conspiracy theory!

 

The AT Bossman has a couple of well paid researchers that throw a hand grenade in every once in a while then quietly exit stage left whilst the rest of us try our hardest not to get drawn in, then finally give in to the urge and, wham, you're hooked!

 

That's the only way I can reconcile some of Vesp's posts.... He's a paid stooge of the management!
