Ah yes, I never had one, but yes, for space, they probably out-volvo'd the volvo: they also held their value and so were never in my price range.

I saw a lovely old Merc estate on the M11/M25 merging sliproad the other day. I saw it in my right mirror and thought, "What a lovely car. I bet it's really well insulated and serene in there. The driver must be in an oasis of calm."

Which they obviously were because they did exactly what they looked like they were going to do, smoothly coast into my path. I performed an evasive manoeuvre and followed it for a couple of minutes, watching it casually try to kill a few other people. I took the first opportunity to pass it so as to not be stuck behind the inevitable accident, which would also present an opportunity to eyeball the driver.

"I wonder what kind of bigot I'll be today." I thought.

Middle-aged Chinese woman. Didn't see me. Could have been a statue. Yep. That fits.

If you caught them in the dip on the value graph, before they became collectors cars you could get them for a very reasonable price. An awful lot of car for not much money. Bullet proof too, especially the earlier W123 diesels. You could probably run them on lard if you wanted!

There's a reason they're still plentiful in the Middle East and Africa.

This is Passat number 4 for me and the wife over the last 25 years, can't fault them as a machine. As you say, throw it all in the back, and there's still room to spare. 

We had a sport version last decade, that was great for running up and down French motorways between the Alps and UK/Ireland.

 

Funny story (well, not very funny, to be honest) about how we got the current one, I'll type it up when I've finished work.

Have 4x4 capability and the ability to tow 3500kg did it

That’s very commendable and entirely your choice, I hope they don’t “tax you into oblivion “ for the privilege of owning it as you wished upon others regarding a different type of vehicle.can it tow 3500kg ?? 4x4 ??
