  3. Done this , more than once .
  4. Thought that was the difference between bow saw blades I've bought. Green wood are offset and dry ones aren't.
  5. Today
  6. Don't you have to also 'set' the teeth as well as sharpening? - is that an easy process - not even sure it's a necessary process but I heard that's what bandsaw blades needed. I think it means the teeth need to be slightly off center going left and right.
  7. That's the answer. I quote for work years ago now and it was big job, re-pollarding willows, the nearest quote was £4000 dearer and the highest was £12000. And before anyone asks I made money on that job.
  8. Thanks chaps good advice. got a second quote in today same spec £9k. Just proves quotes can vary wildly. I’ll get a few more in.
  9. Drive Hiab truck up to fence Place one 30 yarder up against its rear bumper, doors open facing the rear Place the other behind it with the doors open to match the first Climber slings out bits that will fit in the giant 60 cubic meter mega skip you have created, numpties take turns at unhooking whilst they smash it all down. I would be looking at less than 60 minutes per tree, less than 5 liters of fuel and about £5K plus vat over here in expensive Scandi Wegia We do this kind of work frequently.
  10. Thank you all for the comments, definitely proves my point
  11. I concur. By 'accuracy dropped off' I assume OP meant 'finished cut looks like a washboard'- especially on softwood, and I'd have a sore shoulder from forcing them through too. I treat my saw blades like my chainsaw chains. When they stop cutting easily, I swap them for a sharp one. On a wet day I enjoy a medative morning sharpening my chains and bands. £400 investment in a Ripper 37 profiled CBN wheel and the basic Oregon grinder pays for itself quickly if you're otherwise just buying new Ripepr 37s at £40 each. Ten days to be precise!🤣 Figures from memory but can't be far off.
  12. How precious are you about the 2 rows of garages? You could try posting the job on checkatade/mybuilder etc.
  13. I make my own rope shackles ... but wouldn't use them if I was being paid to do something. I use out of date strops ... but not if I was being paid. I know that neither will break as I understand the forces employed but a council HSE man isn't that intelligent and only looks for 'in date'.

  17. I was composing something similar but didn't want Mick Dempsey saying I didn't need to eat them, just fell them. Could be 3 days per tree, these are the ones that seem to overrun the quote when I'm subbing, no machinery means an awful lot of blocking up and then a lot of sawdust to clear. I agree, find the right firm that have the specialist gear and contacts and get more quotes.
  18. When I got into tree work twenty years back the going rate, according to The Forestry Commission pricing structure, was £650.00 a day for a 3 man crew with a tipper/chipper. Taking inflation into account that figure is now close to.£1,250.00 a day for the same crew. When other costs are factored in it's not unreasonable for that firm to be asking for closer to £2,000.00 per day. It would probably take a crew of 3 (or more) people who only have a small tipper and chipper best part of a week to remove and dispose of those trees. Possibly longer depending on access, tip sites, and general logistics. Stump grinding will also take some time with those oaks. On that basis I reckon a quote of >£10,000.00 isn't unjustified. I think for a job of that scale you might well find a better quote if you find a firm who are heavily invested in the mechanical side of arb, and can turn up and do it in a day/couple of days.
  19. Photos on other thread now. Lot of wood, dubious quality milling wise.

  21. Tried some cheap cord first. Then a ring out of Mamut 9.5mm dynamic climbing rope. Tapered the core of the female but not the cover, and tapered both the core and cover of the male and pulled it inside. I used one fid length for the tapers. The last inch of cover has frayed but it lines up with the mark.

    Harmony Gardens

Harmony is a community garden next to Broadwater Farm Community Centre. Drive thru gate and woodpile is in front of Poly tunnel, next to Fig tree.
  23. all the same... for that 50k I'd also go for a ride in it! If you are planning to build there, can the sheds be taken away first - makes the job easier and maybe cheaper, likewise if the lawn isn't precious.... might not be much of a reduction though.
