  3. so instead of taking the lot after WW1 and lording it over them, the allies went soft and let the Germans rebuild their country, not long after they rearmed. If Germany was really defeated in WW1 it would have been the ideal time to do an Israel and stop them from ever having weapons again. WW2 happened because the allies couldnt stomach occupying Germany forever
  4. Happy birthday!
  5. Now that was an historic day....Happy Birthday Stubby!
  6. Sorry . My Mum gave birth .
  7. Reform promises(d) change. They appear to be hiring the same people who did a shabby job of running the country. Perhaps they have a cunning plan.
  8. aloft? Sorry, Pavlovian reaction to a typo. Just call me picky.
  9. On this day in 1953 I was borne .
  10. I know you have already been corrected on this but it might be worth reading up on the causes of World War 2. To an extent it was down to Germany being punished severely and stripped of much of their land in the Treaty of Versailles. The USA came up with a list of fourteen principles that were meant to be enshrined in the treaty and how the defeated Germany were to be treated. Every single one was broken by the allies.
  11. What about Robert Jenrick?- a first in history from Cambridge. Maybe the majority are numbnut skinheads, but some are highly intellectual. Jenrick is now Reform's seventh MP, it's not all about illegal immigration, but even very clever people have had enough
  12. Research indicates that individuals employed in the private sector are more likely to hold right-wing, conservative, or market-liberal views compared to their public sector counterparts, who tend to lean towards left-wing parties . This divide is often associated with differences in economic security, views on taxation, and attitudes toward government regulation. Key findings on the relationship between the private sector and right-wing political leanings: Small Business Owners: Studies show that small business owners and those in the "gig economy" are significantly more likely to identify with right-wing parties. This is often due to a preference for lower taxes and fewer regulations. Industry Differences: Small business owners in sectors with high regulatory, labor, or compliance interfaces—such as construction, healthcare, and manufacturing—tend to lean Republican or right-wing. Company Size: Workers in smaller companies tend to be more conservative on socioeconomic issues and more skeptical of trade unions than those in large corporations, according to research from 16 European countries. Private Education Link: In the UK, individuals with a private school education are twice as likely to be consistent Conservative voters by midlife, and one and a half times more likely to hold right-wing opinions regarding income redistribution and the role of business. Voting Behavior: Private sector workers have long been more likely to vote for conservative parties (such as the Conservatives in the UK) compared to public sector workers. Drivers of Right-Wing Views in the Private Sector Reduced State Intervention: Private sector workers generally favor less state intervention in the economy. Economic Independence: The experience of running a business or being self-employed often leads to a preference for economic individualism over state-provided social safety nets. Cultural Factors: Some studies suggest that the "experience of being a small business owner" directly influences the adoption of conservative views on regulation. Those at the bottom of the education/ employment ladder are as often as not the ones most affected by mass immigration. The conclusion they are likely to be against it is not surprising nor requires a degree to make.
  13. 2 alternative explanations. Could have been a surface runner. Or could have been a shallow root but ground has subsequently been reduced in level. I have seen something like it before in poplar which had had a foot of woodchip dumped at the base, had had suckering roots into the chip and then the chip had rotted away.
  14. It looks as if there is rot in one of them which will affect the value. If I milled them for a customer I would charge probably £30 per cubic foot. Shorter beams would be less; I charge a premium for long beams. But as it is unlikely they will exactly match anyone’s need the seller will have to be realistic. If he gets £20 per cube he should be happy.
  15. Yep, makes perfect sense

  17. you are right - wish I'd commented instead on the cow that picked up a deck scrubber, clamped it in its jaws and itched her back with it. First reported tool use by bovine. Who knows in a few million years the cows may be ready to rise up against us.
  18. sounds a bit much. Fruit trees like slightly acidic soil. How much is a stove pan - 2 or 3 kilos? I give fruit trees a spade full a year. but who knows. Very difficult to prove what is too much.
  19. tree-fancier123 straight out of the blocks with a contentious take. 'A slice of Germany forever....' That would have made us no better than that which we fought against. As it was, Stalin did indeed keep what he fought for and Poland ('the country on wheels'), the Baltic States and Ukraine fell under the Iron Curtain, with parts of Germany becoming Poland and parts of Poland becoming Ukraine. The 'orderly and humane' displacement of peoples that followed was anything but, and as we celebrated VE Day Europe was plunged into further bloodshed and turmoil as old scores were settled. The conflict between Poland and Ukraine was particularly brutal.

  22. 😂😂😂Ambiguity SP/TA you couldn’t lie straight in bed wee man. That is your high level strategic view of the situation I gather. Venezuela 🇻🇪 and Norway 🇳🇴 !!!!!! ??????
  23. what got me about WW2 is when they say unconditional surrender or whatever - if I was in charge I would have wanted the land we fought for - a slice of Germany forever. Let the other allies keep a slice each and the German language would have to become illegal. That was the proper way all through history
  24. They call him "Diggerless Dempsey" which is better than than "Dégeulass Dempsey" Few will understand this play of words...
  25. We should start a History thread maybe... How about 'Making the news today in.....(choose your year) ' ? e.g, on this date, the 20th January in 1945 the fourth inauguration was held of President Roosevelt. It'll either be the most learned and courteous thread on Arbtalk, or if someone picks a contentious subject more in keeping with 'Making the news today' and 'Potus'.
