  4. @Welshfred Excellent book! Thanks for the recommendation.
  5. I agree but not with the idiot part, as I would be an idiot with the scars to prove it! Its more to do with home owners having accidents cutting up firewood that caused the issue IIRC and yes they did lump all the accidents together hence the requirement to ask for certs. A customer came in yesterday with one, I wasnt around but he was asking if we could get replacement bars and chains. He said they were selling like hot cakes and it was all the old dears diving in to get one. Hopefully there wont be another HSE or whichever body tried to ban the sales investigation in 6 months time.

  8. Faithfull Nail Puller 60cm (24in) | Power Tools Direct WWW.POWERTOOLSDIRECT.COM The Faithfull nail puller is the perfect tool for removing nails from most materials, lifting floorboards, opening wooden crates and... A modern version of an antique nail puller my father in law had. I never really tried it as it was designed to work. You use the slide hammer to bury the claw under the nail head then as you lever it the claw grabs the nail and pulls it. I see no reason it wouldn't pull a staple. I quite fancy one for reclaiming pallet boards but I so rarely have the need now.
  9. Or personally I'd just replace them with clipex and let nature eat the rest of the posts. Don't think I'm ever going to use wooden posts again looking at my not so old fencing with rotten posts with the guarantee that's not worth the fag paper it was written on.
  10. It’s 120 posts in at 1.7km long fence- not sure if re build is worth it. staple pullers would be good idea if the staples weren’t driven into the wood. angle grinder might be the answer- especially if I can cut just one bit and twist it to release the wire, saving the hassle of picking up the bits.

  14. Woody Paul was right. We did go back to insurers, who refused to fund more treatment. We shd have stuck to our guns, but we are committed now. I think it's important to make it clear to both insurers and possible future buyers that the subsidence problem has been dealt with and the mitigation works carried out exactly as prescribed. Tree-fancier123, many thanks for that very detailed advice - really helpful to have precise measurements to follow. The problem with letting it grow is that we would be continually having to cut back - not a simple weekend job with a 3m stump. We might let a sideshoot regrow as part of the hedge (if it survives the treatment) and see how we get on. Now that there is more space and light I'd rather embrace the change and plant on either side of trunk with hazel and hawthorn seedlings, more interesting than the leggy privet we inherited.

  18. yes, I recall that was a later model, an old trick to play when we were kids was to bumpstart an old bsa bantam field bike by pushing it backwards, and then offer a go on it to the many asking, they would put in in gear and let the clutch out expecting it to go forwards, but it went backwards instead. pretty soon everyone had caught on.
