I know people in the press tend to sensationalise, but the rhetoric around the Mandelson scandal is getting absurd now, with it being called stuff like "the scandal of the century so far".
Yes Starmer has created a shocking and entirely self-inflicted scandal for himself to deal with, but let's not forget some other pretty crucial stuff that's happened this century.
In 2003 Tony Blair deliberately misled the entire country into joining the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq, which killed at least 200,000 directly; caused one of the biggest refugee crises ever; and created the lawless terrorism-breeding ground that gave rise to ISIS (the exact opposite outcome to the "war on terror" rhetoric used to justify the invasion in the first place).
Scores of MPs were caught red-handed thieving from public funds with absurd and inaccurate parliamentary expenses scams, and most of them were just allowed to get away with it.
Jimmy Savile. The way the BBC and the establishment order circled the wagons to provide cover for probably the most prolific paedophile ever caught in Britain, and to protect the reputations of establishment figures like Charles Windsor and Margaret Thatcher who delighted so much in his company.
City of London bankers recklessly gambled themselves into insolvency, and then the Westminster establishment order used vast amounts of public cash to outright defy the free market principles they all espoused, to save them from the consequences of their own actions. Probably the biggest example ever of "privatise the profits and nationalise the losses".
From 2010 onwards David Cameron and George Osborne used the cost of bailing out the banks as an excuse to create the longest economic stagnation in recorded British history, by outright defying economic convention by arbitrarily slashing spending in the wake of a crisis, instead of investing. Their cuts to the NHS and social security system led to an estimated 300,000 premature deaths, and every Prime Minister since has continued with their radical and destructive fixation on austerity ruination.
The Bank of England created a whopping Β£895 billion in quantitative easing cash to spend on shoring up the assets of the mega-rich, knowing perfectly well that the benefits would accrue to the wealthy at the expense of everyone else.
David Cameron was caught hiding the profits from his dad's tax-dodging empire, and the press reaction was to try and make out that Jeremy Corbyn should resign for the rudeness of attempting to hold him to account over it!
David Cameron staked the entire future of the United Kingdom on a Brexit referendum bet, in order to lure a few thousand Faragist voters into voting Tory in the 2015 general election, and then spectacularly lost his Brexit gamble.
Theresa May came up with an absolute shambles of a Brexit bodge, Boris Johnson used the chaos to usurp her position as Prime Minister, outright lied to the public about his Brexit plans, and then plagiarised May's shockingly bad deal to essentially force the UK to impose economic sanctions on itself.
Boris Johnson oversaw an absolute orgy of corruption during the Covid pandemic, where Tory insiders used the crisis to rip up the procurement rules and funnel literally Β£billions in dodgy covid contracts to their spivvy mates, often in return for completely unusable materials.
Liz Truss managed to tank the economy within days of coming to power by listening to the advice of a bunch of radically right-wing Tufton Street think tanks, and refusing to allow the government spending watchdog to check her plans before she announced them.
Rishi Sunak was caught red-handed pretending to be a full-time citizen of the US while he was working as Chancellor of the Exchequer, while his wife pretended to be a full-time resident of India in order to dodge tax liabilities on her inherited wealth fortune, then the Tories made him Prime Minister as a reward!
Nadhim Zahawi was caught dodging literally Β£millions in taxes through an elaborate offshore scam designed to hide his profits, threatened lawfare against those seeking to expose him, and was eventually allowed to keep his job as Chancellor until he was forced to resign on a technicality rather than go to jail. However he was allowed to keep his position as an MP, and he's just jumped ship to Reform UK to demonstrate that they're just the same as the Tories and Labour when it comes to rewarding corruption.
Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer gave military, economic, and logistical support to Israel's genocide in Gaza, and Starmer went even further by misusing terrorism legislation to attack and intimidate anti-genocide protesters, essentially revoking the British people's long-standing right to engage in non-violent political protest.
This lot is just off the top of my head for a quick Facebook post, but the thing that makes me think it's all going to eventually get brushed under the carpet just like the rest, is the fact that we live in a country where the crowd and police physically assaulted the one guy who was brave enough to shout that Andrew was a disgusting nonce, then the crowd responded with chants in favour of the paedo-protecting Royal family as the lone voice of decency was dragged away by the cops.
We're surrounded by people who consider themselves inconsequential serfs, and adore their beloved lords and masters. People who believe that that it's absolutely right that there's one harsh and draconian set of laws for lowly people like themselves, and a completely different set of laws for the wealthy, powerful, and aristocratic rulers, that amount to little more than inconvenient spider webs.
Andrew may have been made to give up his titles and move into a smaller publicly funded home, and Mandelson may well be made a sacrificial goat for the corrupt, incompetent, economically heinous, war-mongering, genocide-enabling Westminster establishment order, but nothing will really change unless the British people get up off their knees and demand better for themselves.
