The bit that loses me is when people ask questions because the homeowner never covers all the info in their origional post so it gets muddy ๐

Is this tree going to die and dangerous
Paddy1000111 replied to Bigben143's question in Homeowners Tree Advice Forum
It's the combined info from all the ops posts. If you set it to sort by date then you can see all his replies in order explaining what he did -
Hi Guys, Mainly one for admins. Is there any way to set it so that I always see arrange by date as standard? The question topics are all being arranged by votes and it's confusing the hell out of me ๐

Anyone Using A Chiminea or Solo Stove
Paddy1000111 replied to Witterings's topic in Log burning stoves and fireplaces
The chiminea once she's up to temp and burning is a beast. Starts getting a flow of air through too like a draught furnace and you get almost no smoke. You only really get smoke from a fire that's not up to temp (or bad fuel etc obviously) and the chiminea works a treat. I lost my old photos when I changed phones but I had a photo of my friends chiminea that he had running like a jet engine with flames about 3-4ft out the top and not a whiff of smoke. Hottest it's ever been was burning diseased bee hive parts covered in wax, couldn't stand within 4ft of it and it was howling ๐ -
The engineer in me says that if there's nothing behind it then drill a 2mm hole at the end of the crack. Known as stop drilling it will stop that crack getting worse!

Is this tree going to die and dangerous
Paddy1000111 replied to Bigben143's question in Homeowners Tree Advice Forum
Something is very fishy here. So you own the land and the tree and there was no TPO (and definitely no pto). The tree tried to assassinate someones gran so you wanted to cut it down (when for less price and stress you could have had it dead wooded and branches checked but each to their own) and then suddenly there was an emergency TPO but just before that you girdled it? This kind of smells of a conservation area or you knew about the TPO when you girdled it. No-one normal goes "I want this tree cut down so I'm going to girdle it first". Personally I would brace for a nice cuddly law suit. Either you are nuts and girdled a tree for a laugh (probably after watching wranglerstar do it) which makes no sense or you knew about the conservation area and/or TPO and broke the law, I would suggest the latter. I'm not a "Tree hugger", it's your tree so do as you wish (although it's nice to keep large trees as there's less and less) but you wanted advice and my advice is to brace yourself for funding a new council toy and possibly getting a criminal record. To be fair, you're even providing your own evidence for their fight -
However much your local hiring company wants for their grinder if it's for yourself? Those grinders are piss easy to use and 17" is pretty tiny. I paid ยฃ44 for the day last time I rented one

How much are you looking at for crane hire would be my question? What's the balance between the cost of the crane Vs the cost of the team? Would the crane rental be a lot less than the additional cost of a slightly smaller team for a second day to complete the last bit? Better the money goes in your pocket than the crane companies. Unless it was a road and you needed to deal with closures and traffic control and the time based cost of that I can't see the advantage of having it done in one day with expensive kit and possible damage to the brickwork?

This definitely sounds like the sending the apprentice for spirit level bubbles jobbie ๐

Buy a cheap laser measurer offline (one of the hunting scope type not the bosch household things) Plenty of calculators online. Measure from where you are stood to the base then to the top. You know the angle of the trunk is ~90 degrees so you can work it out

I'm buying a Forst ST6P because of the power issue and I wanted a sub 750. In the sub750 class it's a trade off of build quality vs engine and after using a petrol one I really liked it. I absolutely love the kubota diesels but being throttled like they are is so sad. I'm not Boujee enough to get a brand spankers chipper (buying a 2018 model with 300 hours on) but the future of the second hand market will be interesting! Like the trucks, small engines with low emissions pumping out big HP. They just can't take it ๐ A 2.0L ecoboost transit is a prime example

Is it your crane or a hire in? If it's a hire in you can get their advice and get them to bring big pads, my local company does a free survey. I did a bit of crane work when working for the council recovering a couple of sunk boats in the canal (120 tonne). Personally, considering the drainage situation and the unknown paving strength I would map out the utilities and position outside of it. Even with a pad, 40 tonne is a big crane to trust to bricks.

I wonder if the chipper downpower is all to do with this new plant emission limit stuff where all plant over 19kW has to have a DPF. No-one wants DPF's

Had delivery of wood and it is quite wet...
Paddy1000111 replied to carbs for arbs's topic in Firewood forum
If you're getting readings as high as 80 is that from the middle of a freshly split piece or the end grain? If it's been left out in the rain it will show very high on the ends. Still too wet to burn but will dry an awful lot quicker than if you were getting high readings in the centre of freshly split? -
With my pathetic, post lockdown strength probably not ๐

I can't wait to buy one (881). I'm waiting on stock on a bar for a panther mill as otherwise it's just going to sit in the house burning the warranty ๐
-
Having used an 880, unless you have big timber you are better off with the 661. 881 is only really in its element ringing up big timber or milling. I would say for anything else a 661 would be preferable

I'm getting wary of these newer smaller engines. Bit like everything else in life, just because it can max out at X horse power doesn't mean it can do it all day everyday up hills and towing large loads etc. The delivery guy stopped for a van chat when he dropped me off a parcel today as I was working on my transit. He said he just sold his 2.2 after 540,000 miles and he didn't have any issues with it bar the usual wear and tear. He got a 2.0 ecoboost transit to replace it as it's all he's ever had and swore by them and its gone through 2 engines in 18 months. He's now got a VW

Hi guys, many of you are aware of the issues with getting GB bars into the UK at the moment and the timeframe keeps extending. My customers are getting a little antsy now about having work done as it seems to be a piece of string shipping date (at no fault of the companies in the UK). Does anyone have a 74" bar they want to sell? I'm looking for a HSS74-63RQ 74โณ Thanks Patric

This is also why it's a good idea to follow them on the phone to the police. They actually turn up when you start threatening to take action yourself ๐ To be fair, the police by us are very good, they like a good chase and whilst they are stretched manpower wise they aren't as bad as other areas. It's not what it used to be though. We had a ford fiesta stolen maybe 16-20 odd years ago by a guy who cut the sunroof out and jumped it. Within 13 minutes we had 2 cars, a dog team and a helicopter ๐

Probably drive by and hang back, I would have already called the police at this point. Wouldn't take much to follow them feeding info to the police.

Most of it was said in jest ๐. I think I will stick with a lock box on the outside as so it's inconspicuous and will deter any dumb luck thieves. Ill put the dead bolts down the door hinge side so the hinges cant be cut off to remove the door. The sides and back are completely covered so there is no way at all of them getting in there. The alarm I was looking at was a camera/pir unit with a 130dB alarm and then an external antenna for the phone as most wont work inside the container. It's disarmed by a remote so it alarms instantly so no chance of them smashing it before entering or something. It all being inside will also deaden the noise a little to the outside until I turn it off for a false alarm via the phone control. I'll probably also make a smoke screen thing, it will run off a small battery and will cost about ยฃ40 to build and is probably the biggest time wasting delay thing I can think of, set it up with a disarm switch on the door, fit it with a buzzer and then set it up with a 6-8 second delay in case I forget. Worst case scenario it goes off and costs me ยฃ20 in canisters. I may look at doing as you say and putting a bar in the front maybe 2 ft off the ground as it's for the trailer then putting some loose rebar in the middle so you can't cut it with a disc cutter or something. I already have some spare scaffold etc so that won't cost anything. All that twinned up with a wheel clamp that I have already will mean getting it out will be a good 10+ minutes.

+1 for @daveatdave it's the responsibility of the farmer to ensure their livestock are kept to their land not yours. Obviously they will probably not do a nice job if they are "forced" but you could offer a 50/50 split and put in some nice fencing that's made more budget friendly?
