It's probable that the log supplier has kiln dried the oak for the same length of time as other types of wood and that will not be long enough. The only way to be sure is to split a log and test the moisture in the middle. A decent maul will split a straight piece of oak.

Get an adaptor for stove to flue. Get a six inch cowl. Put the five inch cowl on e-bay. -

Another reason for using the top down method: On several occasions I have lit the kindling in the traditional method and then been distracted by a telephone call or something else and forgotten to put bigger logs on and find the kindling has all burnt away and I have to start again.

I have a small vintage wood burner in my conservatory and bought a small grate (£9.99) from an ironmongers. I used to put the grate in if I wanted to burn coal but I leave it in all the time now even when burning just wood. It works fine. Simple solution to this. When people are panic buying petrol or diesel make a minimum charge of 30 litres for each car or van. For those selfish people who put just 10 litres in their tank that is fine but they pay for 30 litres.
