  1. Good point and done that before but not always as practical .tried to make it covid safe but completely failed
  2. If it’s anything like this then don’t bother .tried processing for firewood and quickly gave up with most of it as too time consuming
  3. If it does it more when under load Sounds like too much oil .had same problem with a lawnmower .
  4. only to clarify its a garage /storage unit at the house that’s sometimes got a car in .some of the good stuff was hidden which they didn’t see but still lots they did notice I’m more worried aswell if they were travellers ive probably now have got covid .(a load up the road had it )
  5. Yep it’s definitely not worth the hassle selling stuff sometimes They could have been ok but somehow I doubt it ,I should have just not showed up as soon as I saw the wagon
  6. Just sold a few bits that wasn’t needed and met buyer at the garage some scruffy old tranny tree wagon turns up with the whole family on board .wouldn't say pikeys as such but one had the tracksuit on and none paying any attention to social distancing Also Very keen to get something for nothing and wanted to know everything I had even though not for sale get the feeling they will be back at some point to take the lot .maybe I will move everything out for 6 months but all a faf (They saw some of the gear but 50% of it they don’t know where it is )

    Mot testing

Yep I get the feeling that people’s perfectly good vehicles could easily get devalued with an iffy unfair mot history i definitely wouldn’t buy a car with an oil leak as could mean anything but struggle to see how this can just appear out of nowhere since very little miles done since previous test. it was at a Halfords branch .they quoted 455£ for 20£ of parts+ labour

    Mot testing

They quoted 455£ to replace front track rods which wouldn’t cost anything like that .i suspect there is nothing wrong with it
  9. Anyone else found that some garages will put down advisories which some others probably wouldn't? Took a car for mot today which had no advisories for the last 3 years and hardly done any miles since the last mot .it passed first time but with a list of new advisories and the garage tried to sell me 800 quid of very overpriced repair work .maybe all to do with covid and them needing the work but also messed me about and claimed I turned up early so ended up waiting longer .I was planning on selling it with the fresh mot but I reckon most people wouldn’t buy a vehicle with an oil leak on the recent history .
  10. Interesting thread but possibly not a great deal .sometimes I do similar work and use to take some loads at the end of the day to sell but decided after a while it wasn’t worth bothering with .i would rather pay and get small diameter cordwood which is much quicker to process
  11. Bought an ms241 with a 14’’ chain for use doing a few weeks of coppicing .it is the perfect power to weight ratio machine especially with the smallest chain on it ,the only issue I found was that if your pointing the ends of strainer posts then an 18’’ chain is needed so possibly would need 2 saws .a 261 is a wise choice aswell but a little weighty
  12. Just been researching ‘’ solid ‘’ furniture again .Interestingly enough oak furniture land seems to have possibly found a legal loophole in marketing stuff as ‘’solid oak‘’ which only seems to be around 30% real oak mostly on trim and doors but bulk of the furniture is made up of osb with a convincing solid veneer and solid oak pieces glued on to simulate an end grain of a wooden top .they even claim on the ads it’s not veneered but it sounds a bit misleading to me It would be intresting to order one of these 100% oak coffee tables and actually work out an accurate percentage of the difference timbers used and then film it so people know that what there buying is just glorified argos furniture and nothing like the real handmade solid furniture
  13. it’s not just cut in half looking at this pic .probably just a thick board with the end slices glued on and a bit of photoshop
  14. I personally prefer to use a short Irwin toolbox type saw than silky /Stihl types .cuts faster and only about £6 so I could get ten of those for the price of a high end pruning saw.as already suggested I’d hold back before buying loads of gear .from my own experiences opportunities in this sector seem limited on the island and those which offer some occasional/ part time work are only basic labour rates (minimum wage )some of the guys I do occasional days with get a lot of there work from the mainland and spend a few weeks/ months there at a time .it might be wiser to get basic screwfix ppe to begin with
  15. also what about offering bespoke fencing .ie woven willow made to standard 183 widths .seems that many fences look cheap and nasty and don’t last
  16. Have come up with a few ideas this week .one of them is cutting different types of timber to rounds and glued /layered up into bowls.another one is getting a trailer off unseasoned hardwood rounds but got a feeling most might end up as firewood but it wouldn’t be oak
  17. Hi yeah it wasn’t originally the plan on doing anymore to the seat but it will finish it off nicely with it hollowed out a bit .how much would punters pay for stuff like this
  18. This is the first attempt at fine woodworking but needs the base hollowing out now and edge bevelled
  19. After further research into this with pricing of materials etc .market leading national retailers like oak furniture land are selling solid oak coffee tables from £115 so there is no way of competing with this type of online market . I have sussed out there low price business model though - they probably import the timber pre ready cut and machined then simply assemble in uk with less labour cost but still sell as uk made.( also this maximises shipping container space and reduces costs ) Also noticed there is lead times on the furniture so nearly everything is likely only made to order and probably mostly online sales and they use there own vans so again cost price reduced seems like a good selling point though might be that everything made must be bespoke and unique and hard to replicate and timber being sustainably sourced only from uk. Wider boards also looks nicer but not seen in mass production furniture
  20. Might have a go at selling furniture stuff in the new year as would fancy a change if it’s a viable business idea but what sells well which can be made fairly cheaply and looks good .the first chair I recently made cost too much to build from prime oak and probably wouldn’t have a market. one of the ideas is to get green chestnut poles and have a go at making benches
  21. Also had problems with the same felt glue seemed as though I was sold duff old stock which never dried so ended up nailing it . right pain as-well to wash that gunk off .almost as bad as underseal
  22. Believe most of it came from Hondura up until about mid 19thc .one example here , I’ve seen it for sale around £4 a foot for bigger diameter logs but international trade not allowed . Seems as though in uk a decent board would sell for about double the cost of walnut if anyone could find it
  23. Anyone know how successful growing rosewoods in the uk might be ...I’m intrested in trying to grow some into a thin straight pole for chairs .
  24. No surprise it failed mot after driving on the road to hell .must be a more careful driver
