I'd be interested if you go ahead and get it through planning. My feeling is the tree will be fine, willows stand an enormous amount of abuse above ground and sprout back. The RPA is obviously standardised and not right for every tree anyway, some roots will be outside that but there's plenty of room for it to seek water in the rest of the lawn. -
Aren't working visas for Aus, NZ Canada easier when under 30? Fly now while you still can!

True, but either way it's their decision, you just need to get them on site to advise.

You need to talk to your DNO (distribution network operator), they will probably suggest a shutdown. This depends on your area, round here UKPN and if you go on their website there's a section on tree trimming. Live working is another whole kettle of fish requiring qualifications, network approvals, different insurance etc etc - not happening for the likes of me and you.

To me joining would probably make sense anyway, have to be hell of a thickness to hold flat at 1.2m wide so going to weigh half a ton. Guess you could try to find something like cedar, be a bit lighter than oak or ash.

I'd buy a tacho, not super expensive, in fact probably cheaper than a service from a dealer. I bought one so I could be confident what's going on, it's worked well.

Fair enough, I'll think of something else to spend £160 on for fun. Or just pay van tax and insurance.

I was looking earlier and turns out a Husqvarna 120 is only £160 so I guess they wanted something to compete on price with that. The 120 is 38cc and 1.4kW though so chunk more power and roller tip bar. I'm tempted to get one just for fun, so cheap.

I'm really amazed at that, can't think of another solid nose on a small saw? Not even in Aldi. Maybe they reckon no nose roller is better than a bad one.

It's just a big M20 but isn't it? If you bought a few washers and nut from Spalding fasteners would work and be cheap but less convenient.

Ok, for me Aviva renewal 440 up from 390. Direct Line want 620. I'm going to get Aviva renewed before they put the price up. I think this just proves it's a total lottery doesn't it.

Yes, with a petrol engine. Maybe a thousand times better but sadly thick end of 10 times more expensive.

Aviva's been ok for me on the Defender, they even include breakdown cover for a reasonable fee which is a good deal on an 18 year old Landrover. Renewal has gone up to be fair but not as much as yours.

Nope, climbed in one of those although just a trial. Treehog still the worst, instantly you wonder how they managed to make something so uncomfortable.

No, they work by clamping down on the cable, so it has to be the right size and type of cable for the one you have. I've got 20m and then if I need longer for a fell or something I put a doubled 14mm rigging line which is way above the 1.6t capacity of the winch. Also you have to thread the cable through the machine so each time the whole thing needs laying out, more than 20m as well as being heavy would make this more of a pain.

... and don't forget to put the handle in the van too, else it's really annoying having to go back home and get it. Only done it once. So far. I'd agree 1.6t is plenty big enough and dont go for more than 20m cable as it weighs a ton. There's a whole load of the Chinese ones which are essentially the same, Jet was available from L&S at the time so I thought would be good to use a reputable supplier in case of issues but its been faultless. I've also upgraded to the petrol power, lot of money but brilliant. I went for PCW4000 as it was in stock, has holding cleat, and throttle control by rope tension bit like the Eder, and works with wider range of rope.

I think the trees were pretty big when transplanted, and coming all the way from Italy you wouldn't really expect them to grow much for a good few years after that shock . A low growth rate is generally desirable in this type of tree, otherwise you'd be fighting to keep them in shape the whole time.
