  2. Thanks... Just need the bigger bit in teeth and screws kit for the chainsaw body... Do you do these Shavey? If so how much? (UK Postage)
  3. Thanks guys for all the advice... My First Dolmar 7910 Chainsaw has arrived today... I am sure that a second one will follow in the new year.....
  4. Which one did you get and do you rate it?
  5. Anyone on here running a 90cc Makita DCS9010? If so is it any good? And does anyone know who makes it as it is not on the Dolmar website as an option.....
  6. Is there any actual UK based Dolmar dealers? If so who are they as I can't find any on a google search? I am taking delivery of a Dolmar 7910 Chainsaw from a garden machinery and forestry equipment dealer who stocks Makita and they have had to special order in the Dolmar for me.. We anticipated that it would come with a 18" bar and chain just like the Makita's do... BUT when I look on the Dolmar website it doesn't say what bars come on their saw....... So I was wondering if anyone else on this forum who is in the UK has purchased a Dolmar and if it came with a bar & chain or if you had to purchase them separately.
  7. Courses booked so that's why I am looking into chainsaws ?
  8. I am in a rural area and there is a fair amount of forestry work that I could possibly do in the winter months when the domestic and other contracts go quiet.... At the age of 52 I do wonder if that is a more younger person game... Even though I am trying to grow old disgracefully...? I have thought about the climbing tickets as well... We also get some big uprooted tree... so it is all about getting the right chainsaw
  9. Cheers mate. That's informative but depressing information .......... TELL ME ABOUT IT... We all went into that seminar buzzing and we all left really depressed. Especially as I had a young lad that wanted work and the welsh government had a scheme that paid 50% of the wage & Employers NI for the 1st six months to get youngster into employment and off the dole... I could also get 70% funding to help get him his tickets. I really thought that this year was going to be the year I would start to push my business in the right direction. It has always been my aim to grown the business and as I get older I would be managing others instead of breaking my balls...
  10. The answer is YES and NO. A friend has a pub that is also B&B and they got to the VAT threshold and wanted the B&B to not be vat registered where as the pub/food side would be... Big no no from the accountants.. As a sole trader or small partner ship it would be almost impossible. The only way that you could run two businesses separately is if they were both separately set up as limited companies, but then you would have to adhere to a whole host of complications.
  11. The moment you have anyone working for you directly, subcontract or just simply a customer doing a menial task then you have a liability and a duty of care.. As soon as anything goes wrong it all gets very stressful as you are a professional and should have acted accordingly. This also applies to two sole traders working together on a job with each having their own insurance.. One party has to become the main contractor and at that point he has to have EL to cover the other contractor. By not having EL you are setting yourself up for a fall if you have anyone helping you. I did a Business Wales introduction to employing staff day to assist companies to develop and grow their businesses. There were approximately 10 small sole trader businesses looking to take on their first member of staff.. We all started the day hopeful that we would go away in the knowledge that we would soon be expanding the business.. It was quite frightening prospect listening to everything that was said and by mid afternoon everyone was rethinking their future prospects and saying that they were now not going to take anyone on... Glad I did the day as it was very informative and no I didn't take anyone on.
  12. I had Kumo MT51 all terrain (Mud & Snow Rated Tyres) and really rate them and they were cheaper then the BF Goodridge and Cooper AT... The Kumo MT51 also had a stronger side wall as well... Chunky as Hell
  13. Great PR from Stihl piss off your regular repeat order customers. Mind you domestic market is probably much larger than the pro. But how many saws are sold on the back of pro's using their product and it being seen as the brand to have as a result.
  14. Out of interest how many of you guys doing council / local government contracts in Grounds Maintenance use Makita Blue kit like Blowers, Strimmers, Hedge Cutters and Chainsaws??? The resign for asking is that I am thinking of buying a Makita (which is a Dolmar) 7900 chainsaw that is a darkish blue colour. I have concerns on a health and safety grounds that it is NOT in a bright hi-vis type of colour. I have come across a case of workers on a council contract using a Blue Makita back pack blower were told that they couldn’t use it by the council H&S officer because it obscured the Hi-Vis jacket, where as a Stihl, Husky or Echo in a bright orange colour is acceptable. In a bright colour it is considered as a control measure. This has now given me concerns about buying grounds maintenance Makita Kit. Which is a shame because the Makita/Dolmar 7900 chainsaw is a cracking bit of kit.. So has any one else had this issue on equipment?
  15. I am with Trust Insurance and they were the best for me last year. But I added a Mini Chipper (Greenmech CS100) to my insurance and a Top Handle Chainsaw and they have told me that my insurance will be going up as they now class me as a tree surgeon .... Which is strange as I am not a qualified tree surgeon (IE in rope work and full on climbing) and technically don't do that sort of work. I am more Grounds maintenance and what I am doing is still all covered in my current insurance policy. The Baby Top Handle Chainsaw and the mini chipper is for hedge reduction where you really don't want a two handled chainsaw when toping out a hedge and the mini wood chipper is for waste issues as the local tip no longer wants large amounts of green waste. But regardless Trust Insurance are saying that they are moving everyone who uses a chainsaw to a tree surgeon policy that will cover ground maintenance tasks (ie Grass Cutting, Hedge Trimming, Decking, Patios ect)... I think that it is really an excuse to just bump up peoples premiums.
  16. Forgot to ask.... If I wanted to add a longer Bar & Chain.... Say a 24" or the next size up.. I take it that you would use another manufactures product like Oregon. Does anyone know what is comparable?
  17. Dolmar Chainsaws any good? I have had the Makita/Dolmar EA7900 78cc recommended to me as being a good and powerful Chainsaw that is on par with the Stihl MS441 & MS462 and it smashes them on price. A big saving of £280 to £300 + VAT.. In fact I have been told it is a bit of a beast. Anyone able to comment Makita/Dolmar EA7900? (Makita now own Dolmar Chainsaws). It seems to look ok from the Youtube footage... I currently Have a Stihl ms211 & ms251 and want something that is a whole lot more and able to rip into stuff.. It is mostly to be used in a Garden Maintenance Business role and felling up to CS31 level which it should smash through... (the MS 251 does the job but slowly, especially when chopping it all up). I will also be using it for dealing with wind fallen trees of various sizes The only down side is that it won't have the backup that a local Stihl dealer with parts stock will have... But with that sort of saving you not far off having two of them for the price of one Stihl MD462. Anyone own or used the Makita/Dolmar EA7900 78cc that can advise? Also If I wanted to add a longer Bar & Chain.... Say a 24" or the next size up.. I take it that you would use another manufactures product like Oregon. Does anyone know what is comparable?
  18. I was on the understanding that I had to do the CS32 before I could do the CS38 & CS39....... Is this no correct?
  19. I run a sole trader garden maintenance business that has just got through its second year. So still a bit of a newbie in the business. I am after some advice as to what should be my next step up in chainsaw purchase.. I started off with a Stihl MS211 Chainsaw which has been a great little chain saw on domestic properties.... I then upgraded by adding a Stihl MS251 chainsaw to the kit list (And the Stihl Polesaw).. These have fitted in great for working within my qualifications CS30 & CS31... I am now adding CS32 (Tree felling over 380mm) and know that for this I really will need to get a bigger & more powerful / professional chainsaw for this work and wondered what people would recommend to be a good Chainsaw for this level of work... (I won't be doing forestry). I have been please with the Stihl Chainsaw so far.. Had a play with a Husqvarna and it looked more complexed to work with than the stihl range... I have also used The Echo CS2511TES Mini Top-Handle Chainsaw and was impressed with that. Questions: 1) What would the more experienced members suggest would be my best option to upgrade to in the Stihl range for CS32 work? 2) Is Echo now a good alternative to Stihl? If So what would you recommend in their range? All advice welcome
  20. Thanks for all the replies.... Greenmech CS100 Chipper is ordered now... Decided not to get a cheaper copy... Did look at the Eliott Machine buy they were even more crazy money... The advice has been most grateful... Thanks
  21. First post so I hope that I have done it in the right section... I run a small sole trader garden maintenance business that is still in it's start-up period. When ever I have done bush clearance, tree pruning, small tree removal, hedge cutting and removal I have always just dragged the waste to my trailer and taken it to the local tip to dispose of the waste using my trade waste licence. But from now on things have changed at the local tip making it very hard to get rid of any volume of waste. I also get the impression that trade waste will soon be refused. I have not budgeted for this change and it looks like I will need to get my first chipper... I am looking to get a 4" / 100mm chipper that I can get in to residential properties and transport around fairly easily. I would therefore be grateful for some advice on what to go for. I don't want anything that is cheap and nasty One option I have been looking at is the Greenmech CS100 but I had not budgeted for this situation. So is it worth breaking the bank for one or is there equally as good cheaper options with a good engine? Also is there any creative advice on off loading the wood chippings with out paying to dispose of them at the local tip? (I should point out that I operate from a residential location so I can't store them to sell on to customers further down the road). All advice is welcome
