  1. It's a hard one as the owner of the tree is usually the one with the duty of care for that tree but obviously the cutting of the roots has had some impact and I would agree he has some duty of care in that respect, although he was well within his rights to cut the roots and by law he doesn't have to give notice of doing so. "the owner of a small property where a hazard arises which threatens a neighbour with substantial interests should not have to do as much as one with larger interests of his own at stake and greater resources to protect them: if the small owner does what he can, and promptly calls upon the neighbour to provide additional resources, he may be held to have done his duty: he should not be liable unless it is clearly proved that he could, and reasonably in his own circumstances, should have done more." Goldman v Hargrave, 1966 Everything I can find relates to the owner of the tree, I would agree the neighbour should have done what he deemed reasonably possible to prevent it happening and appears to have been negligent.
  2. Under English tort law roots on your property count as trespass/nuisance and you are fully within your rights to remove them back to your boundary without notice. Would be interesting to see a ruling if this did go further for damages, how it was ruled in regards to who was liable.
  3. I'm still after the original body language of trees, was gutted when I missed this by a couple of hours! The Body Language of Trees: A Handbook for Failure Analysis by Great Britain:... | eBay
  4. Are you getting QTRA confused with Fight Club?
  5. Be warned it turns in to an addiction! I've got six bikes now but still don't have an outfit like that
  6. This is great, wish more conferences did a similar thing but then I guess they wouldn't make as much money in ticket prices. Just had a look through Barcham's youtube channel, are there any more similar channels you guys know of? Cheers
  7. I've had a couple of days over last month but if anyone needs a hand on anything throughout March, let me know!
  8. I'm still in this boat, even having read both the links it still makes no sense. Why not just ask the people who are going there who has told them about the area? Would a better use of the money not be to afford some protection to the trees rather than going on an internet man hunt for someone which will make little to no difference? This is obviously something very close to your heart but I don't think it's coming across in the best way.
  9. I'm a little confused on what you are trying to achieve? Are you trying to stop someone telling people where to see redwoods?
  10. Think you could be a little late
  11. Evening all, i'm looking for weekend work to gain some more experience. I've recently done my chainsaw maintenance/cross cutting & basic felling techniques course as well as being in my second year on a BSc in arboriculture. I'm based in Accrington but obviously willing to travel. Cheers
  12. Do GoPros not come with their own software anymore? That allows basic editing and is fairly easy to use (think it's called GoPro suite?). In regards to why the footage may not be looking a good as you have hoped, do you have protune selected on the GoPro? This will make the footage look a little grey and washed out before you colour balance it. Regarding your settings, are you actually shooting at 1080p @ 30fps ? If you're only shooting at 720p then upscaling this could be the reason it doesn't look good as its doubling the size of the image and if its not the correct framerate it will either be adding or skipping frames. Also 130000kb isn't needed for your export as the GoPro only records at about 45mbs so you're trying to add information that isn't there and will just be making your file size bigger for no reason.
  13. Phytophthora (phytophthora x cambivora) causes bark to die and tar spots like in these images but that is usually caused by severe drought As daltontrees says though it's hard to tell from the images and it look like a combination of things to me, you're best finding someone close to you to come check it out in person that can have a proper look. Thanks
  14. Hard to tell off that image but the second picture looks like kretzschmaria deusta, is it like a brittle charcoal?

    Books

Depends what you want to learn I guess. The Jepson books are fairly simple and looking at your sig you probably have most of the knowledge in the books already and anything you don't know is readily available for free on the internet. The Bob Watson book is great but at the opposite end of the scale is fairly in depth, i've got it to help on my degree and some of the stuff will make you scratch your head but is one of the best books i've picked up so far.

    Books

You can get the first couple cheaper on Treesource. There is also someone selling them on eBay in group deals which makes them cheaper than amazon and saves you the postage of Treesource which goes up instead of down the more you order . Also check out world-of-books (think that's their correct username) on eBay they often get some really good second hand books to do with arb. Rackham, Starr etc and they go for a couple of quid, you just have to search through their shop as they're not very good at listing things.
  17. Hi, I'm on the second year of the course and would agree with Andy you need to have a real desire to put the work in yourself, I probably spend ~16 hours a week on it at the moment so be prepared to lose half your weekend and most of your week nights too. We've had trouble both last year and this year with the course not being updated but our assignments still need to be handed in on the same date (our last one we are missing 3 weeks of content but the submission was still last week). I have also sent assignments to tutors to ask for guidance and had no reply which is fairly poor imo but others have responded with in 30 mins and have been really helpful. Not having that ability to just go and ask someone a question can be really frustrating if they don't respond to email though. If you need to know anything more in-depth let me know!

    Ash ID

Here is the bud: Just a Fraxinus excelsior with wavy leaves?!?

    Ash ID

I will go back and get a better shot of the bud as I know Fraxinus angustifolia is more brown with a "tri" formation but looking at the bud on this shot it definitely seems black. My second thought was F. pennsylvanica "marshall".

    Ash ID

Morning, Can anyone help with the ID of this ash: I'm thinking it maybe Fraxinus angustifolia?
  21. Is there any way to save this offline to watch?
  22. Woodnicer, whereabouts are you based? I'm currently at uni studying towards a BSc in arb and wouldn't mind giving up a weekend if you're close to help plot these for you as I would be learning something out of it as well. Would be more than happy to provide the info to 10 Bears as well to test his software out. Cheers
  23. Morning, I start my second year on an online BSc in Arb next week. Last year I did start purchasing a few books but this soon became very expensive and the uni library is a good two hour round trip, which I don't want to be doing every weekend as most books are a 7 day loan only. Does anyone know of a good online resource for books/papers which has public access? Cheers
  24. Yep, i'm doing the same with the top up year at the end? In first year at the moment so it's just for arb practises. Ye the lack of support is sometimes infuriating, we have a hand in on Monday and still haven't had this weeks notes and then for some reason we receive the last set of notes on the day we hand it which seems odd. The tutors do seem to reply to emails within a few days though and people are using the bloom site to discuss things so if you need answers can usually get them fairly quickly.
  25. Depending on what system you are on, I-movie has a frame grab option built in. Will depend on the frames per second (fps) the video was shot it in regards to the amount of quality you can get it off it, higher the frame rate the better chance of a sharp image.
