  1. With the size of the P Talbot plant I too doubt if they have space to air dry their fuel, so as you say must go in at 40%+. They must use a step grate type system and use some combustion heat to dry the chip before it gets to the fire. A bit like your kiln drying but a bit more efficient. Presumably you air dry your chipwood down to a reasonable level then chip it?You must have a fairly large efficient boiler so do you not find the RHI covers your fuel costs?
  2. As an outsider to this with no foot in either camp I have been reading this with interest. Whether or not it was ash's intention but calling the lower MC product kiln dried and the higher one seasoned is infering that seasoned wood is inferior to the kiln dried product. As has already been said if you use wood that would be left to rot then no difference in the C footprint but I would be interested how ash powers his kiln.
  3. I once tried a Titan owned by a friend of mine, considering what I've read about electric chainsaws I was very surprised with its performance. He's well pleased and done a lot of work with it. Chain speed is 13.5m/s, he prefers it to his small petrol husky, much quieter than any circular saw I've used and the price is very cheap. No contest I would say
  4. I think it's the total of the boiler outputs that determines the RHI tariff tier. If we added 50 kw to our 1mw then our tier would have changed. Main reason for multiple boilers would be either backup or reducing transmission costs. A good chip boiler would have an efficiency in the 90s.
  5. In the absence of the op, he should be looking at softwood. Per tonne it contains around the same energy as hardwood. As softwood is cheaper/ tonne then his energy will be cheaper. We use all soft woods apart from the ones containing large amounts of resin such as leylandii.
  6. We buy a fair bit of wood every year and found Euroforest take the hassle out of sourcing it. Highly likely to be no dearer for you than buying direct. They will organise the wood and transport to your yard. You just sign the cheque.
  7. Also it's not only the LA who has to clear it up. Any landowner will have to foot the bill for the cleanup if anything is tipped on their land. It becomes industrial waste apparently.
  8. There will also be spare heat from the gasifier and engine cooling system. We looked into this and after drying the chip to feed the CHP there would be spare heat available for other uses. Quite a long payback though.
  9. Have a look at the Dolmar range. Shavey on here sells them and both get good reviews.
  10. I think you will get saws much bigger than a 135 suggested. I have a husky 450 with a 15 and 18 inch bar which I am pleased with, a bit more plastic than some but no auto tune so a simple homeowner saw. More money than a 135 and the toolless adjuster is delicate , but can be modified when it goes I believe. Or better still get a saw with a simple nut etc.
  11. Size of tree you are thinking of cutting would help.
  12. Or even a smaller bar and split off segments with wedges then go along the length again. I have lengths of 45 to 60 inch diameter I do this way.
  13. Because it's a Mercedes. Springs and shocks screwing camber up, diesel leaks after service. Seat adjuster goes wild. Many common faults as well as poor dealer service. Not what they were.
  14. Myford were very well known for their small metalworking lathes. Reasonably priced, average quality, every model maker and his dog had one. A long standing British company so they must have done something right. Not so many of their wood lathes around but I expect you can still get parts for yours if you need something.
  15. Marley head sawmills South Brent or west country timber supplies as is now I believe. It was about 9 years ago I dealt with them so I cannot say if they still have it or use it, worth a call possibly.
  16. Several years ago we used to buy chip from a sawmill that chipped the slabwood waste. Very good G50 chip straight out of the chipper with no screening needed. They used something like a 30kw Motor to drive it. It was quite slow but some of the best quality chip size wise I have come across. I've not dealt with them for many years and I believe there has been a change of ownership but I'll have a look today and see if I can find some contact details.
  17. We use a hot melt glue gun for sealing/ joining woven ground cover. No idea if it would work on your sheet though.
  18. Sorry, not got around to it yet. I have more than a winters worth of wood down that is starting to go over so best not cut any more just yet. Its on the list with rebuild trailer, refurb mower deck and build shed. Not absolutely decided whether to mount to the mower or the trailer it pulls, but it's my intention to do it this winter. Either way it will anchor to a tree.
  19. May be slack in the bearing causing the drum to rub on the lining when loaded. Grab top and bottom of the wheel and rock to check if you have slack
  20. Of course not she loves that table cloth. A very coarse mesh muslin is what she has in mind I believe
  21. Funny you should mention insurance because she has just increased the cover. Paid for it herself as well. She's a good girl. I think the spill just prompted her to get me out of the house more.
  22. The bad news is I spilt some of my Newcastle brown on the wife's newly laundered table cloth. Absolutely devastated but managed to suck most of it out so not all bad I suppose. Good news is the wife was going to make me a wingsuit ( whatever that is ) to help me take up a retirement hobby but now she has brought that forward and is making it now. Anyone on here had a go at that, she says it looks like fun.
  23. Hi Marcus We have a Taffe 45( mf clone) nice little tractor to drive and used old style tech as in mf240, but it's weak point seems to be the pto clutch if used hard. Common problem I believe.
  24. This looks right. We get 2 x 15min breaks paid and unpaid lunch(30 min)
  25. 1.7 cc more and our 181 didn't bog down in bar length oak 14 inch bar btw
