  2. Very very wise words Adam I have been a contract climber for ten years before then 7 years employed I spent my employed younger years thinking all I wanted to do was be the hero subi climber that came in and did all the difficult take downs that everyone was in awe of the first few years of self employment I did feel a bit like I was some sort of tree hero travelling miles to sort companys problem trees but it didn't take long for reality and a recession to change things it's a lot of unappreciated hard work often often pushing ya body and sometimes safety to the limits to get jobs done that other employed climbers would have twice the time to complete I am now 34 I have a terrible bad back a terrible addiction to working at every opportunity I am given because I don't no when it may go quite and with a family mortgage and all the other expenses running 5 chainsaws countless climbing and rigging kit plus a pick up I worry even day about money I make a good day rate but like u said not getting any money for any time off sick or holiday soon makes that day rate not look that clever! Thank u for ur post I no I wasn't the only one thinking what u first wrote but I hope some young lads stay employees hone their skills and if they decide they really need a mental and physical every day and worries the rest of the time come to the dark side and be a subi climber ha

  10. When I was nineteen I went to work in the USA this was fifteen years ago I went wanting to gain experience in larger trees and to use what I considered at the time more advanced techniques and better machinery which I felt I did but still to this day one of the most valuable things I brought away from my three years there was to push my self way beyond my comfort zone in a situation that I thought I couldn't do but then after I did felt so much self belief and grew as a climber because of it the turning point was one day I can remember it like it was yesterday I went to do some removels with the forman I worked with a very capable and knowledgeable climber twenty five years into his career at that time we got to sight looked at the trees to do and there was a dead red oak Tree nothing to break under neath but didn't look nice had allot of bark missing wasn't tall mayb fifty feet I was told u can do that and than we will move onto some trees near the house I decided my stomach hurt and didn't want to do it so was asked a couple more times if I was sure than he put his Gear on ran up tree crashed it out in ten min max got in truck pulled chipper as far away as possible and said chip it up the I regretted it all the time I was dragging thinking why did I lie about my stomach and not just be a man and do the tree we both laffed about it later in the time I was there he said he new I could do the tree or wouldn't of asked me to I have never refused or made up a excuse since I have been a contract climber for the last ten years specialising in large tree removals I see horrible unsafe trees on a regular basis a pride and want to be the best I can be and test my abilities and knowledge as a climber is what drives me not just to make a wage and go home
  11. As a contract climber I had my best year since the crash last year had to travel about more than I wanted but didn't have any scary weeks with no work let's hope 2015 is as good or better :-)
  12. This may not be the wright place to ask this but there seems to be allot of knowledge on pick ups so worth a shot I have a d40 navara which just before Christmas had front passenger wheel bearing go so I replaced it well a garage did yesterday I noticed play in the same wheel returned it to the garage wear they said bearing had failed again replaced it again for free saying it must have been a faulty part I can't help worrying there is some other reason it's gone thru two bearings in less than a month any ideas would be much appreciated as I am not mechanical at all :-(
  13. I don't have a trailer but I do supervise the sights I work on ;-)
