Hi Spud,

I've rebuilt quite a few saws lately and am getting quite competent at it, not least from what I've learned from your posts! However, I have a 357 that needs a new piston (that arrived today) and it seems nice and wide leaving plenty of room for a bit of creative pot carving! How wide is it safe to go to without the ring catching and what setup have you got to get in and work on the upper transfers? Sorry to be cheeky and hope I'm not being a nusaince!

2. Sorry Barry, my mistake, roller width is 5mm. Stupid boy, Pike!
3. Pin diameter. 3.65mm Pitch. 12.00mm Pin length. 12.00mm Roller width. 7.70mm Thanks for looking Barry.
4. Could I send you a little sketch with the important dimensions?
5. Hi Barrie Knowing how much you love cylinder mowers! Don't suppose you got a drive chain connecting link for a Suffolk Super Punch hanging about anywhere have you?
6. Talking to Husky dealer today, he had no stock of auto-fill cans as was fed up of the leaks and was waiting for the new type to come out.
7. Good afternoon Gentlemen, I've just picked up an unwell 575xp (pre-autotune) and cannot find a free service manual. Anyone got a link handy? Thanks in advance....
8. 038 is funny as it has the piston ring stop pins on either side of the exhaust port plus the piston skirts aren't very wide. May not be much room to do any widening.
9. Ther's one on fleabag even as we speak. Started at 99p---bargain!
10. Thanks Sean, much appreciated!
11. Sorry being dozy! Missed page 4. Duh!
12. I'd, temporarily, get a bit of ally bar and file it to fit the internal profile, drill and bolt it on while keeping your eye out(and asking on here!) for someone with one kicking about. You know it's out there somewhere............
13. Morning chaps, Anyone got one of the above kicking about? Finished refurbing saw and it doesn't look quite right withot one. Beer vouchers available.
14. Try lsengineers, they were helpful for bits for my 038S. The rubbers may be common to several models.
15. It's about time we had some pics of real saws on this page! Shed find Oleomac 2640DL, I think, rebadged as a Lawnflite. Hardly used, goes like a train and handy for weightlifter training!
16. Hi Steve, Thanks for the welcome! I thought I posted an intro last night but as I can't find it I must have missed the "post" button. I live in South Wales, volunteer for a local woodland management group and mend saws in my spare time. I have been lurking for some time but this is such a brilliant, helpful and friendly site, I had to sign up! I love the Spud, Gardenkit and Rich interactions!
17. I don't like the look of what appears to be two bits of metal embedded in the squish band in Pic 2.......
18. Hi Spud, Piston and bore in very good nick, no gouges in piston or ally pickup on cylinder. New rings fitted due to 110psi reading with no change after fitting, old ones looked and measured ok. Took out 0.8 mm gasket and couldn't get piston to touch top so have re-assembled with silicone gasket and now waiting for it to go off before retest. On the Stihl 038 s there is no machined squish band. Thanks all for your input!
19. Hi Dan, Comp tester newish, hasn't been a problem before. What I meant was that the Husky 254 I also have in bits for a new little end bearing has an actual horizontal band about 5mm wide machined into the combustion chamber in the same plane as the top of the piston so squish measurement easy peasy. However, on the 038 no such band exists and the dome of the chamber begins virtually at the edge of the combustion chamber, making it much more difficult to measure. By bearings I meant little and big end, any wear in these would contribute to a false reading. Thanks Rover, I'm aware of the vital .5mm!!
20. Hi guys, on dino's bench today is an 038 super. Comp. at 110 so fitted new rings as bearings appeared to be ok. No change. However it's really difficult to measure the squish as the pot has no squish band except a millimetre ridge around the inside of the pot. Guessing, I removed the gasket, about 0.8mm thick and turning over manually there is no TDC contact. Am putting back together with just HT silicone gasket. Is this a good idea? Your thorts please....
21. Don't make the mistake of putting the chicken wire straight down into the ground. bury it about an inch down but with the bottom six inches laid flat under the soil facing the rabbit side. Rabbits are pretty stupid and dig right next to the fence, where they will dig down to meet the wire. Simples!
22. I use a 10mm round polythene stick about 150mm long. I use them for repairing skis. Just pop it in the plug hole and it can't damage anything. Not for hot saws though!
23. Thank Wisecobandit, I was beginning to think obsolete! At least it's not the big end.
24. Hi Spud, 254xp carb now sorted but when about to replace it I was moving the flywheel and felt a weird "rock over" action at TDC. Whipped off the pot to find the small end bearing like a willy in a shirtsleeve. Haven't taken piston off yet but assuming it's just the bearing at fault, where do I get one. Can't find any on the net. Cheers in advance....
25. Thanks Spud, Hugo very helpful, part on it's way!
