  1. Kilkeel: Orchard Ermine moth larvae strip hawthorn hedgerows WWW.BBC.CO.UK A mild winter is blamed for an explosion of a pest that can devastate hawthorn hedgerows.
  2. 6ft just bramble alone is fairly straight forward its when there 15- 20ft high growing up blackthorn scrub etc thats a real pain.
  3. Nothing wrong with using top of the bar just avoid the:
  4. Keep meaning bother to try soaking the strimmer line see if it makes a difference. Dense lush grass thats flattened by rain / is hard going with the 3mm stihl stuff I have atm Fast in upright grass or weeds but once grass has fallen over annoying... Grass is is lusher and thicker this yr than average 100mm of rain in May last year was only 11mm.
  5. Like something from Hyacinth Buckets gaff? Suppose some people have no taste Putins Billionaire palace as an example looked awful.
  6. Think having more power will equal more speed on both grass and bramble Does any other brushcutter cut this rapid? 3.3kw I only use a stihl 360 regulary with a mulching blade and its slow in comparison to above and the 3 point mulch blade is very poor on grass compared to strimmer line. Used the bigger stihl a while back and while faster than the 360 still slow compared to the "brutale" Do people sharpen mulching blades often and does it make a big impact?
  7. Raptors are apex predators that non doubt were many times more prevalent historically before habitat loss and human persucution ans pop numbers will eventually reach some kind of equilibrum? Deer on the other hand will need constant culling as no Wolves.
  8. Don't repeat cut same high for 2 long as you get a knuckle forming change height to either higher ot lower = healthier hedge
  9. I started to cut a hawthorn hedge every 3 yrs just to allow more berries for birds, hedge seems to be alot healthier since, and by leaving it wild it shades out the ivy more than when it was cut every year. 3rd year growth gets covered in berries. I think cutting very often may weaken the plants making them less vigorous? Neighbours probably think its being lazy look untidy, & its its also alot more hassle doing it every 3 years than cutting regular as a load of larger arisings to deal with. Beech and elm hedges I cut every year.
  10. They probably had a blade can't remember. Yeah thats was the idea Wildlife trust stuff cut by volunteers supposedly has to be removed from site or burnt on a tin sheet and ash removed. They also put down a plastic board walk don't think thats a good idea.... Screwing cutting it etc all creates alot of plasctic bits NRW projects Natural Resources Wales / Anglesey and Llŷn Fens LIFE Project NATURALRESOURCES.WALES The Anglesey and Llŷn Fens LIFE Project makes it easy to see how natural resources management can be relatively simple...
  11. Proper triffid like
  12. Seems excessive you were using the proper full synth oil mix? Warranties? Offtopic.... Local Wildlife trust had some contractors spending days strimming reeds on a marsh and raking them up into builders bags with hay rakes. Thought it was abit crazy as looked a large open flat area covering several acres where some bigger machines could of done it all in a few hrs?.... Think strimmers are only really ideal as edging awarkard bits as when used to clear bigger open areas takes ages... NRW has a fleet of specialized kit sitting on different marsh only a few miles away. Softtrak think they were.
  13. The bigger on has half the virb rating and only 400g heavier on the spec Edit 600g doh suppose thats noticable Full tank is 1.1kg

Hares just got in the garden a ate all my brassica though( saw a a bunch of them ) Never had, either rabbits or hare damage happen before, but the old cat who always used to eat rabbits died recently and the new one obiviously isn't up to the job. will be a pain to have to start fencing everything....

  16. I bought an east german one on ebay after the steel handle on my old snapped off (Had being welded back once already - internal rust) Four Bees: East German Army Pioneer Shovel, DDR National Volksarmee Pionierspaten, NVA, Feldspaten - Field Shovel, FM logo SHARKY-FOURBEES.BLOGSPOT.COM Well, I went and did it again......... I added two more shovels to the collection! In my own defense, they were only sold in a... Decent quality. Alot of modern hand tools seem to have poor ergonomics and terrible quality.
