  1. Cheers, always interesting to see how different effects are created, for me at least. Sand and oil everything. If I ever carve something with fur or feathers I'll try a different approach.ta.
  2. Like that, captures perfectly the essence of sheep. (Sounds like a shite aftershave). Great job.
  3. He's really good, proportions, finish. How did you finish him? Another carve I've not tried.
  4. Thanks WW. High praise indeed. Must admit he didn't gather much dust, unlike most of my stuff. Might have to do another for my "stock",ha!
  5. He could be the twin brother of my green man. So it's obviously a bloomin' masterpiece. Lovin' the GREEN,man! Ha ha! They seem to be popular at the mo.
  6. Ditto, a definite style in both pieces.
  7. Sorry. No advice for you sir. Only played with a blowtorch and never done scales but it sounds like dervish has it it covered. Anyway, that is coming along great, perfect idea for the stump. Look forward to finished pics.
  8. Cool. Makes a nice little scene.
  9. I like the bear mate, I'm no pro and I've not carved a bear yet but I think he's pretty good. Good proportions, gives him a high cuteness factor.
  10. Lovely piece! Great lines, nice finish, top job all round.
  11. Taking great shape mate, that's gonna be a beaut. Seems to be a popular carve that one. Have to try one sometime. Have you used a pattern of sorts or minds eye?
  12. Cool g.m. Nearly all my stuff is just because I fancy carving this or that. Done a few comissions and I quite like having perameters to work to sometimes, but get more enjoyment out of doing my own thing. Hence a garage full of half-finished stuff.
  13. Very nice piece.
  14. Brilliant! They look ace mate.
  15. Hiya, I have both of these saws ,ms192 and an Wes 270cs. Not tried any other saws with carving bars but both of these are perfect for carving. The 192 has more umph! No probs with 12" bar, but as previously mention they don't make em any more and are hard to come by. They sometimes appear on eBay but they're priced accordingly. I got mine from a dealer who'd had it sat on the display for ages,he just wanted shut of it, £220 brand new, a nearly bit his hand off.result. I reckon you should go with the echo with a 10" on it.
  16. Great stuff dude, like the snail and the heron, although the benches are mega!
  17. Great job mate, that's a big bird, I too need to have a crack at one of these.
  18. Amen to that brother! If you're "in the zone" tho, you gotta admit it's not always at the forefront of you're mind. Don't get me wrong I'm as careful as the next bloke and have seen the damage a saw can do. ALWAYS wear yer gear, keep it clear underfoot, don't over-reach or try awkward cuts if you're not in full control of the saw,or you're balance. Be aware of where you're body/limbs are in relation to the saw etc.... It all sounds like common sense but considering the implications, not worth any risk. A good topic NFG, and a serious one, hits hard when you see pics( I'm also Phil Dunford trained) Stay safe amigos.
  19. Good first effort mate, we all start somewhere. Check out this masterpiece. Yours is better than mine.
  20. Not much in it really, have a 10" and 12" dime tip both on 192's, a little more control with the 10" A little more reach on the 12"- to state the obvious. I think I find the 10" more usefull of the two. Horses fer courses
  21. Ingenious mate, yet so simple. Nice one, gonna remember that for future endeavors.
  22. Been asked to do a green man carving so I thought I'd have a wee practice. Took me about an hour to flesh out, thought it weren't too bad so spent another hour fettlin and staining with decking stuff. (Might get a few quid for it) Hope to do a better job of the commission, I'll have more time to play. Need a better vision of what I'm going to carve. Any advice on easiest leaf shapes to carve? Or additional details? Please.
  23. Cheers Derv, sharing the know how, liking that idea. Are ya sayin thin before using in a sprayer?
  24. Just thoughts. I tend to think the natural wood looks best anyway, and use Danish oil on most stuff cos I don't know any better.
  25. Totally agree. Had to get myself one of these too as b/ day pressie to myself. Had it about 2weeks now, but only had time to play with for about 10 mins, nothin worth a picture but I like it a lot. I've put it on my echo cs270wes, and it seems very suited to it size-wise if a bit vibe-y? Any advice on the chain tension, I'm assuming pretty loose, and what's the crack with having the chain all dangley like...?
