  1. Love it Hamish, been watching the progress pics on fb, excellent result.
  2. Thought about blacking out the eyes and nose, was also liking the multi staining done on splinters's roebuck. Seeing as it is quite light coloured wood was wondering about dotting the back with something to seal spots so when stained it left light patches like a baby deer has? Dunno yet? When I get time. Work gets in the way. Ps. absolutely amazing comments fellas, really appreciate it.
  3. Another great carve mate, love to see some pics in-situ.
  4. Ha ha, lol, presume you read my "rant" on movin big butts. Yeh this 1's totally manageable ta.
  5. As the title suggests. Had this roughed out a few months back and managed to get round to fettlin it today to an "acceptable"finish.[ATTACH]
  6. Great carving, impressive piece, even more so after only a years experience. Look forward to seeing more of your work.
  7. I have a similar problem. I'm lucky because I have had quite a lot of big timber dropped off by a huge tractor and trailer which to be honest I pay peanuts for considering the amount of wood and it's delivered. But...they're too big to move,i never refuse the timber when it's offered (sporadic) and it's starting to pile up and is getting in the way. I also want to carve some bigger stuff but even if I did the carvings are still gonna be a problem to move.......arggggggh! Can't bring myself to chop it up, seems a shame. Been thinking about milling some of it, maybe for benches, tabletops but that's a load more expensive gear and a whole new world.....arrrrgghh! Dilemma. No time to carve never mind spend my life at the gym becoming the worlds strongest man so I can shift the stuff. **** it!!! Anyone wanna buy any carving gear. Sorry, just realised this doesn't help at all.
  8. Ha ha! Yeh,What he said. You won't want to leave. Look forward to some pics.
  9. I'm thinking a die grinder would be a usefull addition to my carving tools maybe with some carbide burrs? Anybody use one for this kind of application? Good/bad? Makes, models. Revs,-wondering what's best fast or slow? Been looking at the makitas gd800 and 810, seem pretty much the same but one is up to 7000rpm and the other 7000 to28000. Will one cut better, will one just burn the wood,--confused?? Any advice would be muchly appreciated.
  10. Knew from the off that were gonna be a belter. I was right. Love it. Gonna have to have a go at one of these sometime. Sorry.( plagerism- but at least I admit it)
  11. He's a beaut. Great work mate.
  12. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.
  13. Post em,post em,post em.......etc
  14. Sweet!
  15. Cheers, writes itself, and thank you!
  16. Cheers, dunno really, just attacked it every now and then when I had a free hour or 2, I guess if you added it up a couple of days. The chainsaw part was really quick, it's just all the finishing that takes time. It's not a commission as such, it'll still belong to me unless he wants to buy it. More of an advert, hopefully get some interest?
  17. Thought that'd get ur attention.lol. Here's one I did for a mate who owns the chocolate cafe in ramsbottom. Still not made it to its home, sat at mine gathering dust.
  18. Top job.
  19. Like that. Nice shape already.
  20. Cheers,a new word for me. Yeah,I think so. Thanks NFG. I kinda like abstract-ish pieces. Here's an even wee'er one (8")I've just done for my niece. She's loves meerkats, and is one at school???
  21. Get fed up with the small stuff, don't have the time or patience to finish them to a standard I'm happy with, chisels and the like. Especially when the woods not great. So this was a bit half-arsed. Wanna try something like,on a bigger scale with more detail(face, feathers, etc)
  22. Don't know didn't fell it, if it's jarrah and Australian doubt I'll get the chance. So it's been out for a few years, pretty seasoned then. There was no sign of any rot, maybe a bit weathered for the first 5-10mm. Did have a 6 foot cut down the grain,5"thick tho. Freshly sharpened chain. Bit of both probably muck and HARD wood. Thanks fer replies. Jarrah it is/was.
  23. Old, but not to shabby or dirty, 'twas defo the timber, very dense and they were really heavy.
  24. Hi, I'm not a arb man, just a carver and not well up on my timber unless it's got leaves on. Anyway, did a favour for a mate cutting some very old railway sleepers today. My question is WTF are they made of? Seriously hard, blunt chain after3-4 minutes cutting. Really red in colour. Nice smell, pretty sure they were untreated. ?
