  1. Just typical of what I was saying is the fact I was out there last night at 12.30 pushing up the fire. Bob
  2. Thats the bit I miss, I bought this place over thirty years ago and every day is work of some sort or another. I could fill every day working on this place and just as you think your nearly there its time to start on things like fencing that are suddenly ten years old again. I know some people would think they are in heaven owning a farm but few realise how much hard work they are let alone the cost of maintaining them. They become a lifetimes work. Bob
  3. Its not all one sided , we do a lot of machine work along side the harvesting guys. We often have to build tracks and hard standings some of which have in excess of 2000 tons of hardcore/scalps . We then have the rake and burn or mulching to do, then all the public footpaths, tracks, bridle paths and fences need reinstatement's. Add in the harvesters , replanting, forest management costs ,returns for the woodlands owners and you can begin to see where your money is going. Bob
  4. Its hardly a surprise when standing timber has been north of £25 a ton at times . You guys with processors will just have to grin and bare it or go old school again. We sell all our log wood for around £25 a ton delivered within a 20 mile radius of Guildford but none or only a small proportion of it would go through a processor. Bob
  5. I got the wife one of those Pug dogs for a present the other day, despite the squashed nose, rolls of fat ,bulging eyes, bad breath and being as ugly as the dog really likes her. Bob
  6. Simple and quick splitter. Bob Homemade manual wood splitter 2013 - YouTube
  7. Ok Mark I am sure I can find you a blunt file. Bob
  8. Probably about a ton Stephen but it was in the bin anyway , we cleaned it up and cut it up as it was up ended. Bob
  9. Thats near enough, contents of the truck weighed 17.385 so anyone referring to the contents of the bin at 17 ish ton has done really well. There was 2 ton of chip on the transit and 4 of the cubic meter builders bags of rakings which I forgot about which would have been another ton so the true weight of the tree was about 20.385 ton. Surprisingly accurate Sam So NI tree wins the broken chain and blunt file.
  10. Some of you are good, someone is within 250kg of the weight. Bob
  11. Just fit a new headlamp unit and drive it , no one will notice. Bob
  12. There is a whole windblown oak tree in the bin including the stump. Its all chopped up in into handle able pieces because it had to be barrowed out. The chip went away on one transit load and the rest is in the bin which is 60 cu mts. . Tree was 35` tall and app 4` across at ground level. Just for the hell of it I ran the truck over the weighbridge. What did the tree weigh? prize for the nearest winner is a blunt file and a broken 18" chain Bob hthttp://i.arbextras.co.uk/s/attach/jpg.giftp://i.arbextras.co.uk/s/attach/jpg.gif
  13. I think you should get the hydraulic pressures/flow rates checked before you go on a changing spree. Ten minutes with the right kit will pinpoint the problem. If you haven`t got the gauges see if you can con a mobile hydraulic`s guy to take a squint. Cognitive dissonance is expensive Bob
  14. We employ some Polish lads and some Kiwi`s , no problems . They are definitely beneficial to our outfit and its not cheap labour its more to do with them doing just that bit more than the english lads will do. Example of this is the drag race out of this yard at night with our lads , its always the Polish lads left here cleaning out the trucks and getting tomorrows kit ready. Bob
  15. We supply a lot of wood to the log boys and here in Surrey they have all been busy. One guy in particular has been doing up to 10 loads a day even in the summer. I dont know anyone short of wood but on the same token we dont supply wood thats any good for a processor, I know the harvested log wood has gone up but there is no shortage of it. Judging by the amount of mulching work on the books at the moment the harvesting guys must be busy. A lot of people now will leave the heating off and just light the fire/stove for a back ground heat which is just enough in most cases to take the chill out of the whole house, that is a huge saving on gas/oil .Its not a fad thing its here to stay and people that use a fire wont give up on them easily Bob
  16. It just goes to show that you can get a better machine if you cobble it together yourself. These adapted tracked machines are the nuts, there was one on ebay recently with a small timber crane on it and bolsters, again thats a handy bit of home grown kit. ( men in sheds ) Bob
  17. I will let you know exactly what they do in a few days, I have used our l200 for a few weeks now and have filled it to the neck and ran it till the fuel light comes on twice. Its now on its third tank so when this is empty again i will do the calculations. I have not been unkind to it but its been used in fair mix of typical pick up jobs, not once been over 60mph but has towed for about 100 miles. When the guy use it it drinks fuel but they do drive like *****. Bob
  18. If you were in this area I would take you on with immediate effect, a cutter with spanners background is ideal. Bob
  19. They seem a lot bigger on the truck Although the lads were told to hand dig them out they took it upon themselves to pop them out with the telehandler forks. Whats the chances of survival with the roots looking like this ? Bob http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=141066&stc=1&d=1384992953
  20. Well here are the beauties . There are about 100 plants. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=141063&shttp://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=141064&stc=1&d=1384992455tc=1&d=1384992455
  21. Move onto the dealers sale`s pitch in a caravan and tell them you wont be leaving untill its fixed. It worked for a guy here in Farnborough Bob
  22. The neatest set up for a post knocker I have ever seen was a 4x4 dumper that had the skip taken off the front , the guy fitted a tray in its place which he chucked all his hand tools on and a hiab arm at the very front with a knocker a bit like the one on the clip above . It must of had 5mts of reach ,it also had a quick hitch on the back so he could pull all the materials along on a trailer behind him. He had put a lot of thought into it with lockers on the sides and things like work lights , it even had a third service for a hydraulic breaker. It really was an all in one fencing machine. Bob
  23. If the place has been used as a yard for that long how the hell has it ended up under enforcement? You wont need a consultant to deal with an appeal like this one, you just need to stack up the evidence via dated annual Ariel photographs from a crowd like this Old Aerial Photography from 1917 onwards, a handful of sworn affidavits from credible sources and slap the application in. An appeal officer will see it your way 100%. Bob
