  1. Thats not hard to do, I have seen the same thing happen when the lads were feeding conifer through the chipper. There was a lump of reo bar included in one of the sticks, you would never have seen it. Sometimes its just bad luck, but either way its a brown trouser moment if you happen to be along side the machine. Bob
  2. Our transit tipper had some chip on, when the guys went to tip off the tipper went up about a foot and suddenly dropped like a stone. The ram had pushed its way out of its frame and mangled all the bracing .It always struggles to tip because the greedy boards take most of the load up behind the cab rather than evenly across the bed as it would have been designed for. Could have been nasty. Went to get it off and all the bushes are seized solid so had to attack it with the hot spanner. Got the frame in on the bench for rebuild so I will beef it up and post some pickys of it. 3. It all changes with 4x4 vehicles. Below from a towing guide. Bob I want to transport heavy mechanical equipment across business sites If you are looking to tow anything heavier than 2,000kg, the list of suitable cars starts to get smaller, and moving up to the 3,500kg, the list shrinks even more. Below is a list of the cars that can tow 3,500kg. Land Rover Defender Mitsubishi Shogun Land Rover Discovery Jeep Grand Cherokee BMW X6 Isuzu Trooper Kia Sorento Toyota Land Cruiser Range Rover Mercedes-Benz GL Mercedes-Benz M-Class Volkswagen Touareg When towing for business, if you add a trailer, taking the total weight over 3,500kg, then a tachograph, in most cases, should be fitted. Most vehicle manufacturers will offer a tachograph as a cost option.
  4. Two wheel drive tractor(50-60hp) and a pto winch will set you back £2000, and solve most of your problems.(quote) I was thinking the same and the tractor would sell for the same when your finished with it. Bob
  5. Eddy I dont think you can hold the environmental high ground with the use of 100/200cc shot of 2t depending on what you are using, this pale`s into insignificance when you think of the gallons of associated fuel used in the chipping and transportation of timber off site. Bob
  6. It might pay to get a load collected by a timber haulier, most have on board weighers so you would be able to gauge volumes off that. Bob
  7. Because of this thread I have had a look at the spec/grade of oil that stihl recommend and car lube meets the requirement . API,TC . JASO FB Considering the amount we use and the fact we have had no problems I think I will stick with it. At £8 a gallon vs stihl prices someone needs to come up with a valid argument for me to change my mind. Bob http://www.dhequipment.com/Stihl_info/WhyBuyOilScreen.pdf http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=142424&stc=1&d=1386445789
  8. But as below from Stihl its what is recommended. Coupled to the fact we have had no failures related to lubricants in 30 years is it really a problem? Bob When using STIHL 2 stroke lubricant: Mix at 50:1 (20mls oil per 1 litre fuel) When using any other brand of air cooled 2 stroke: Mix at 25:1 (40mls oil per 1 litre fuel) As petrol has limited shelf life, always mix with fresh regular unleaded, purchased from a reputable large volume fuel supplier
  9. We use car lube 2t ( about £8 a gallon) at a ratio of 25:1 in all the saws husky or stihl and have never had a problem . To avoid confusion we use the same mix in all the strimmers , hedge cutters and blowers which I know is wrong but I feel a tad to much is better than not enough. Mixing 2 Stroke Fuel | STIHL Bob
  10. The man did well but a quick reccy of his past would knock the halo into another orbit. ?Saint? Mandela? Not So Fast! Bob
  11. My advise would be to buy on condition and not the year. There are some really up together old ones out there and some very late dogs. Bob
  12. You will always struggle to convince those that have not run the BFG allterrain that they really are the best tyre for a 4X4. I must be the tightest git on here but I dont mind paying out the difference because like the above post says they will still be good at 50k miles. Not the best in deep mud but the best all rounder by a long chalk..Also very sure footed in the wet. Bob
  13. Guy the log dumped his Navara at our workshops because it "stopped". He is a mate so I attacked it last week to see what was wrong with it. The timing chain had broken so I thought ok a few bent valves and a new chain kit that wont take long. Wrong. You cant get the timing cover off the front of the engine because the oil pump hangs down about 15mm so it wont come forward, so the sump has to come off. You cant get the sump off because there are two bolts that hold it on inside the bellhousing. So its engine out but you cant pull it forward because the diff casing is in the way so that has to be dropped.. What a complete of a motor. 14. I remember those days. It has never been easy to buy a house but going back then we drove £50 wrecks and never had the modern day trappings sucking our wallets dry.The biggest difference is there were loads of old houses that could be bought cheaply and done up back then , I bought quite a few and kept them as renters which is as good as if not better than any pension plan . As it turns out the kids can have them which is probably just as well because i cant see them going without all their must haves which keep them skint and unable to save for a deposit. Its just different times. Bob
  15. Not good. Paul Walker dead at 40: 'Fast and Furious' star killed in fiery car crash - NY Daily News Bob
  16. When you stop and look at the housing stocks of this country you will notice that the only decent properties were built prior to the need for planning consent. I dont hold with green belt policies of this country, if a decent house is built on a decent sized plot there will be more trees, plants , hedges and wildlife habitat there than any farmers chemically enhanced and subsidised field. The quality of life for the inhabitants will also be improved. I am not saying sprawl housing all over the place but give it decent space. There are plenty of places to build without encroaching on valued farm land or trying to condense the population into a matchboxes in overpopulated towns. Rant over. Bob
  17. I am currently messing with the idea, I dont see a reason not to other than whats left for a payload. The ability to load a trailer and back it right up to the job appeals to me. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/arb-trucks/62939-project-6x6.html Bob
  18. If you dial in haulage to my post you can see why its so expensive delivered in. Woodland managers need to show a return to the land owners and justify their programs which will include replanting with all the associated works. No one is having it off ,its just all expensive work. Bob
  19. It may have sounded like I am bitching but I am not. Its just owning these places is an assault on all your free time. She that must be obeyed runs competition horses, we do our agri/forestry business and there is just no free time. I end up working late most of the time just to make the next day just that bit easier. The yard side of things can wreck your sleep, if the dogs kick off in the night you have to throw on your togs get out there and have a look. If the horses bang about in the night you cant ignore them just in case one is cast. I have lost count of the amount of them we have pulled off the walls in the early hours over the years. Then if you are away for a day or two its a permanent worry. I envy those that leave their workplace and go home. Bob
  20. Just typical of what I was saying is the fact I was out there last night at 12.30 pushing up the fire. Bob
  21. Thats the bit I miss, I bought this place over thirty years ago and every day is work of some sort or another. I could fill every day working on this place and just as you think your nearly there its time to start on things like fencing that are suddenly ten years old again. I know some people would think they are in heaven owning a farm but few realise how much hard work they are let alone the cost of maintaining them. They become a lifetimes work. Bob
  22. Its a prison without bars. Bob
  23. Its not all one sided , we do a lot of machine work along side the harvesting guys. We often have to build tracks and hard standings some of which have in excess of 2000 tons of hardcore/scalps . We then have the rake and burn or mulching to do, then all the public footpaths, tracks, bridle paths and fences need reinstatement's. Add in the harvesters , replanting, forest management costs ,returns for the woodlands owners and you can begin to see where your money is going. Bob
  24. Its hardly a surprise when standing timber has been north of £25 a ton at times . You guys with processors will just have to grin and bare it or go old school again. We sell all our log wood for around £25 a ton delivered within a 20 mile radius of Guildford but none or only a small proportion of it would go through a processor. Bob
  25. I got the wife one of those Pug dogs for a present the other day, despite the squashed nose, rolls of fat ,bulging eyes, bad breath and being as ugly as the dog really likes her. Bob
